  • Framing Masculinity: Vincent Keith's Journey in Queer Photography
    2024/03/01

    Framing Masculinity in Queer Photography

In this episode, I interview Vincent Keith, an influential figure in the world of masculine art and the founder of Mascular (https://www.mascularmagazine.com), a quarterly magazine that celebrates masculine art.

Vincent opens up about his journey, drawing a vivid picture of his experience as an American born black gay man brought up in the Middle East. He shares intimate details about how his personal experiences have shaped his work, and how he uses his lens to capture and celebrate different forms of masculinity, body image, and the interactions between men.

Listen in as Vincent talks about his inspirations and influences, which include the works of Blake Little, August Sander and Ron Amato, as well as lesser-known African and African-American portraitists from the 50s and 60s. He also discusses the importance of identity, both personal and sexual, in shaping the way he looks at the world and his work. Vincent describes his style as 'old-fashioned', 'formal' and 'deliberate', and tells us why he prefers a more constructed approach to photography rather than capturing candid, spontaneous moments.

If you're interested in masculinity, gay relationships, queer art and male photography, this episode is a must-listen. I hope you enjoy this deep dive into the mind of an artist who dares to show the world as he sees it.
