Sitting down and speaking with Terri - Louise Brown from Talks with MS is always a joy.

Whilst she throws out a glow of orange positivity everywhere she goes, those who know her best know there is pain behind every step she takes. In her smiles there is joy, but pain too.

Because Terri-Louise can walk, people often assume she is not disabled. Some people with MS use a walking aid or a wheel chair. This does not mean she is any less disabled.

Her charity Talks with MS helps people with MS share stories and help each other. Using each others lived experience they are supporting each other daily.

Road rage changed Andy's life completely.

He was heading for band practice, but his final destination was hospital. The prognosis was not great.

Please take note of the trigger warning around mental health at the start of this podcast as Andy is very vivid in explaining how he felt at the time.

After 6 years of surgeries, Andy got behind the wheel of a racing car which was adapted to his disability. He drove for Team Brit, but when he didn't need the hand controls any more he made the decision to racing a car without adaptions.

Now the speedster, regular beats non disabled people, which as a disabled person he takes great pride in.

Listen to the highs and the lows of Andy's story here.

  • 4. Stepping in and out of Burnout - with Zane McCormack
    2024/03/14

    Send us a Text Message.

Burnout sparked the end of Zane McCormack's career as a policeman.

After recovering from burnout he started speaking to colleagues and friends. Supporting them from their journey. He found himself at a cross roads in life and he chose to become a burnout coach (The Assured Man).

As a police officer Zane has seen a lot of things. Living on the opposite side of the world to his family meant there was a lack of real conversation. To top it all off the world was closing down.

Zane has researched the steps of burnout and recognises the differences between this and PTSD or CPTSD. His understanding allow him to help individuals and businesses manage burnout.

His passion with leadership and how a burntout leader can impact a team drives him to support more businesses. It's up to businesses to support their colleagues and for colleagues to feel safe to speak out about their mental health.

Zane faced adversity head on. He realised the best way to get himself out of burnout was by doing it himself. When a lot of people try to get themselves out of a situation they work harder or try harder - Zane had to work smarter !!

You can follow Zane on his linkedin below

  • 3. Trans Rights: it's like history repeating itself
    2024/02/29

    Send us a Text Message.

As a white cis man I learned so much by talking to Christopher.

Christopher works for Manchester Pride and is an author on a mission to ensure LGBTQ+ liberation is something everyone can enjoy.

Christopher and I both gravitated to Manchester for its inclusive vibes. Whereas I felt living in Cornwall was like living in a bubble, Christopher heard of the work Manchester Pride do in Canada. It doesn't just have a ripple effect in Manchester or the UK, but globally.

He spoke about how people talk about trans people now like they did about gay men in the 1980's. They then mention how supporting trans rights doesn't just have a positive impact for trans people, but for all people.

That was the key message that I took away, a society with love for all people is a better place to live in.

Transphobic hate by the government and media doesn't just take away rights for trans people, but laws they have put in place impact ALL children, young people and adults.

If you are wondering how, you will need to tune in and listen.

But it's important that we don't just make change fir the few, but also for the many.

Whether for trans people or disabled people, everyone should be considered when we work to make positive change.

Everyone should be in our thoughts with every change and every should be allowed a voice.

You can look at the great work of Manchester Pride on their website

  • 2. Winning for SEND: When parents take on their Local Authority
    2024/02/15

    Send us a Text Message.

Disabled Parent - Carer Jen didn't choose this.

Her autistic son didn't want this.

It's impacted both of their physical and mental health.

It all could have been avoided. It should have been avoided. No parent should have to take legal action against their Local Authority to get something that their child is legally required to have.

Jen Dunstan deliver a balanced account of how her son was let down and by who. She talks about those who did everything to make amends and put things right. Not everyone worked against her, but those who did created pain for her and her son.

Court ruled in favour of Jen and I was fortunate enough to be listening to her tell fellow parents on a twitter (X) space. A space that is run twice a work to support parent carers like Jen. Many have children who are autistic or have ADHD, but they welcome parent carers with other conditions too. As well as someone like me, who tunes when I can to learn from the lived experiences that these parents share.

Within the podcast Jen uses a few acronyms which may not be common knowledge:

    LA - Local Authority
SAR - Subject Access Request (This is a request for the detailed notes that an organisation holds on you)
    LGO - Local Government Ombudsman

She also mentions Contact who are charity supporting families with disabled children

You can view their website using the following link Contact: the charity for families with disabled children

  • 1. Tackling Trauma: Tom Johnson relives his bullied past
    2024/02/15

    Send us a Text Message.

Former England Rugby Union player, Tom Johnson has a past that him kept hidden for a long time. Even his Exeter Chiefs team mates were unaware of the scar from his childhood.

The flanker went to boarding school and during his time was severely bullied. The bullying was both physical and mental, leaving scars throughout his adulthood and rugby career.

Tom Johnson played for Exeter Chiefs for ten seasons, helping them gain promotion out of the championship . He played 181 times for the Premiership club scoring 135 points. His all action style of play earnt him a call up to play for England and was the first Exeter Chief to do so since in almost 50 years. He represented England 8 times in what was a position of real strength for England.

On retiring from professional rugby, Tom started to work as a Health and Wellbeing coach. Supporting his clients both with their physical activity as well as other aspect of their lives such as sleep and nutrition.

During his school years at Dean Close in Cheltenham he spent some of his toughest years. In this episode we will touch on how this has impacted him in school, during his rugby career and life post rugby.

He tells how he has now started to come to terms with being bullied allowing him to look forward and not backwards. This has allowed Tom to speak publicly about his mental health and the importance of communication.

Tom is the founder of Plus which is a wellbeing company focused on supporting teachers to deliver health & wellbeing in schools. • An inhumane, discriminating short - the pilot episode
    2024/01/20

    Send us a Text Message.

Welcome to our pilot episode of Overcoming Adversity.

This podcast introduces you to the format of the show, whilst providing you with a mini clip. A short telling you about a moment of adversity.

My name is Scott Whitney. I am the host of this podcast and up until 2020 I was considered non disabled. Pain and incontinence caused me to visit my doctor who rushed me to A&E.

In a short spell I lost the ability to walk, was admitted to hospital with Sepsis, temporarily lost the ability to swallow solid food, had a temporary catheter fitted and began having spasms and twitches.

A lot more would be diagnosed over the coming months and years. I was diagnosed with FND and am a full time powered wheelchair user.

In 2023, I was made homeless and put in to temporary accommodation.

In this short, I tell you about one night in a Manchester hotel, where things didn't go to plan.

Our first episode will be launched on February 15th 2024 as I look for moments of adversity that others face. Some people may be disabled, business troubles, mental health concerns or anything.
