In the decades leading up to the first Gulf War, modern weapons shake the air, land, and sea. In a quiet town in Maine, as a winter storm rages around it, Nocturne Hall sits atop a mountain: an old-fashioned hospital that inspires both power and mystery. A young hit-and-run victim is brought in by ambulance, and the staff and patients go about another normal day. But this is not a normal day, and this is not a normal town. In the spots on the map where light does not linger, there are dark things lurking in the shadows that not even the angels in heaven or the demons in hell can comprehend. And those dark things like to play, with claws and teeth that scratch and bite.

Eduardo has lost both of his parents. In the summer of 2002, he's packed up and sent to Maine to live with his grandmother, in a small town called Nocturne. It's a far-cry from his life in New York.
