A brief biographical sketch of Franklin's life, followed by a collection (published in 1899) of 670 aphorisms, apothegms, or proverbs—short, pithy, instructive sayings—that were scattered throughout the pages of his Poor Richard's Almanack over its 25 years of once-a-year publication (1732-1758). Many of these sayings are familiar to all . . . "a penny saved is a penny earned" . . . "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" . . . but there are many more for you to laugh at, ponder over and learn from!

Poor Richard's Almanack contained the calendar, astronomical and astrological information, poems, and sayings. In the spaces that occurred between noted calendar days, Franklin included proverbial sentences about industry and frugality. Franklin also included the occasional mathematical exercise, and the 1750 Almanack features an early example of demographics. It is mainly remembered, however, for being a repository of Franklin's aphorisms and proverbs, many of which live on in American English.

Benjamin Franklin is the only one of America's founding fathers to have signed all three of their foundational documents: The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the 1783 Treaty of Paris. These documents underpinned the establishment of the United States of America as a sovereign country. In addition to being a prominent politician, Benjamin Franklin was a prolific writer, fervent naturalist, and determined inventor.
