    2023/12/07

Joining Reebs in studio this week is current MLB pitcher Mason Englert, who made his debut this past season with the Detroit Tigers, making 31 appearances before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the 2023 season.

  • 24. Jakob Marsee, San Diego Padres (6th Round, 2022 Draft) | Chasing Your Dream
    2023/11/30

Reebs welcomes Jakob Marsee to the studio for this week's episode to talk about his journey. He has had a pretty unique path after missing out on his high school senior season for baseball due to injury, followed by his freshman campaign at Central Michigan University getting cut short due to Covid, along with his first stint in the Northwoods League lasting less than a week also due to Covid.

Despite the injury and some time gaps from playing in a competitive environment, he continued to pursue his passion and eventually was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2022. His dedication led him to earn the Arizona Fall League MVP this past fall (2023), which is a league comprised of the top prospects in baseball that compete for roughly an extra month after their minor league seasons are completed.

This is a really good listen to gain insight into how to overcome setbacks, the value of family and having a support system, along with having self-determination and how to earn the respect of those around you because of the way you dedicate yourself to your passion.

  • 23.  Jake Boss Jr., Head Baseball Coach, Michigan State University | Building Community in a Big Environment and Being a Great Representation of It
    2023/11/16

This week Reebs heads back to the big seat in the dugout with head coach Jake Boss Jr., who is  currently in 16th season as the head baseball coach at Michigan State University. Boss has accumulated over 400 wins (441-388) in his head coaching career, and has been a part of and led numerous championship caliber teams. Not only have his teams had success on the field, but he has helped develop players individually which is proven by 45 MLB Draft selections during his tenure at MSU along with 206 Academic Big Ten honors.

Boss gives really good insight and wisdom into topics that include building community and an environment that people take pride in--even in such a big environment, such as a state school with thousands of undergrad students; going from a D3 college player to a D1 head baseball coach; how Jake wants his team to be represented when people watch them play; the coaching community as a whole as Michigan State; how his faith in Christ affects the way he coaches and goes about his daily life; and many other topics.

  • 22. DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees | Mastering the Art of Simplicity
    2023/11/09

Welcome back for another episode this week as Reebs welcomes DJ LeMahieu to the studio, a 3x MLB All-Star, 4x Gold Glove Winner, and 2x Batting Champ (both NL and AL). DJ started his career with the Chicago Cubs, debuting with them before being traded to the Colorado Rockies, and then signing as a free agent with the New York Yankees in 2019 and has been with them since.

Topics on the episode center around DJ's humility and ability to keep things simple, which is an easy trait to understand, but hard to apply in a professional setting like major league baseball--and he is one of the best at the application.

His journey from the outside may have looked easy, but he dives into the difficulties of being a minor league player trying to make a career in the big leagues.

  • 21. Jim Minton, Author, Just Call Me Dad | Raising and Coaching Kids
    2023/11/02

Joining Reebs in the Studio for this week's episode is author, Jim Minton. Jim wrote the book titled, "Just Call Me Dad".

The two chat about principles from Jim's book, which focus on having a "Wordview" rather than a "Worldview," which in other words puts the focus on Christ/Scripture, rather than on what the world perceives as success or important.

Growing up as an accomplished athlete and being inducted into the Decatur (Illinois) Public Schools Hall of Fame, Jim began his "dad" journey by living vicariously through his children's athletic endeavors, letting his kid's failures ruin his day when that happened. As he gained more experience in the parenting department and transitioning his focus to the Bible intently, he realized there was a much better path to parenting kids in sports which grew his passion for writing the book.

The conversation is applicable to coaches, parents and athletes because we can all learn from one another and how to propel each other to become the very best we can be. Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
