Coming up on this special episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships that were held in Richmond, Virginia. The race became such a success that if you use Zwift for indoor training, Richmond is one of the most popular courses. It really put Richmond on the map.

A special event put on by local news outlet The Richmonder was held on Tuesday, August 19 at Vasen Brewing Company in Scott’s Addition to talk about how the event came together—which took a number of years to actually achieve.

If you're fan of UCI world championships, just know that Richmond hosted the likes of Peter Sagan, Anna Van der Breggan, and Taylor Phinney and Mark Cavendish–who got some special treatment from us.

  • Mental Health Ride

In this episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, you get to take a ride with me on a mental health ride.

Like many of us, getting exercise not only helps us stay fit and healthy, but it helps us maintain our mental health.

According to an article from last year featured on the League of American Cyclists–a group that has been around since 1880, there are numerous benefits to your mental health when you ride a bike. They list 5 mental health benefits.

These include: Improving your mood; a better connection with nature; it relieves stress; and it gives you better interaction with your community and chances of social interaction.

So, I’m sharing this post from my YouTube Channel IanStewartCycles, from a recent ride I did to try and get out of a funk that was trying to bring me down. You can check out the ride there, as well as my other rides and some of my interviews not featured here.

So, grab your helmet and let’s take a ride.

In this episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, we go in reverse to two episodes from this past year dealing with transportation infrastructure, namely tactical urbanism and inclusive transportation, as in what do these mean.

I speak with a transportation official in Richmond, Va who heads the office of Equity and inclusion about projects that are "Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper; and with renowned transportation author Veronica O Davis about the War on Cars and if that's an accurate statement.

In this episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, we dive into a new data collection tool that connects Vision Zero with public health and hopes to give updates on the progress of Richmond's Vision Zero program. It's a tool that was being used a few years ago, but fell by the wayside.

My guest is Peter Braun, Built Environment Policy Analyst at the Richmond - Henrico Health District.

  • A Chat with the League of American Bicyclists
    2025/06/20

    Send us a text

On this episode of the Mechanics of Transportation, we dive into part two of the price we pay for unsafe streets by talking with Ken McCleod, Policy Director of the League of American Bicyclists.

I reached out to Ken because of the latest uptick of bicycle riders dying while out on the roads. This is part two of the conversation — but it’s ok if you didn’t hear the previous episode in which I spoke with a Richmond, Virginia advocate who has expired traffic violence first hand about what that city is doing to help protect cyclists.

Ken and I discuss these numbers, along with which cities are the best for cyclists and what superpower he’d like to have in terms of biking infrastructure.

  • Take it to the Bridge

I'm sharing an episode from my other podcast, History Reinvented, here because 1), it's about a bridge--an historic bridge in Richmond, Virginia that is about to go through a major rebuild. And 2), it's the last episode of that series and I want to make sure everyone checks it out and listens to the other episodes in the series.

In this episode, I hangout with Richard Hankins, Executive Director of Partnership for Smarter Growth, who are invested in making sure the updated Mayo Bridge is equitable for everyone–not just cars, but bicyclists, pedestrians, people who fish, and buses — and they want to help make sure there’s access to what will be a new and improved Mayo Island.

History Reinvented is a two part podcast series that takes you on a trip around the Mayo Bridge and Mayo Island in Richmond Virginia, from its early beginnings to what the future holds for this historic part of the city’s Landscape.

If you’re a sponsor who may be interested in helping me produce other episodes on the History and Future of Richmond or want to sponsor this podcast, then please do reach out. I’d love to tell more stories like these.

Be sure to check out Ian’s World O’ Music show on Mixcloud. For 17 years, I had a world music show on a local public radio station, where I also happened to report on transportation topics.
