  • #185 Deprescribing Psychotropic Medications with Dr Mark Horowitz

    Dr Mark Horowitz is a training psychiatrist, split between UK and Australia, working in London as a Clinical Research Fellow in the NHS and an Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at University College London. He has completed a PhD in the neurobiology of depression and the pharmacology of antidepressants at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London and for this received two prizes from the British Association of Psychopharmacology. He is also the lead author of the recently published Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, a handbook on how to safely stop psychiatric drugs.

    Dr Emma Tippett MBBS FRACP, PhD completed her medical degree in 2012 and underwent specialist Infectious Disease Physician training in Melbourne and completed her PhD at the Burnet Institute. Since the beginning of the pandemic she has been immersed in all facets of COVID-19 and established one of the first long COVID telehealth clinics in Victoria in 2020 called Clinic Nineteen. In addition, she currently holds appointments at two Melbourne Hospitals.

    Tracey Johnson is the CEO of Inala Primary Care, a charitable general practice in Queensland’s most disadvantaged suburban location and co-founder of Cubiko, a practice dashboard software solution. The IPC model was named as one of four which should be adopted nationally under the 10 Year Health Reform Process and embraces multi-disciplinary care, social prescribing, shared medical appointments, beacon clinics with hospital partners and a raft of research with universities exploring how practices provide value based care. She is Deputy Chair of the Primary Care Advisory Group of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and she is on the Expert Advisory Panel overseeing the review of general practice incentives.

    Professor Judy Lowthian leads a multidisciplinary research team as Head of Research and Principal Research Fellow at Bolton Clarke, a national not-for-profit aged and community care provider. She is an Adjunct Professor with University of Queensland’s Faculty of Health and Associate Professor with Monash University’s School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine. Her early professional career was as a speech pathologist in rehabilitation following acquired brain injury, and in management of interdisciplinary child and adolescent health services. Judy is internationally recognised in the field of gerontological health services research in emergency care, hospital-to-home care transitions, frailty, cognitive impairment and dementia, loneliness, palliative care, and implementation of new models of care with a focus on patient and family experience.

  • #179 Co-Design in Health with First Nations Australians with Dr Alana Gall

    Dr Alana Gall is a proud Truwulway woman, a Pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) from the north-east coast of Lutruwita (Tasmania). Alana is passionate about Indigenous peoples' holistic health and wellbeing globally. She has a background with degrees in nutritional medicine, Master of Research and a PhD. Alana is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine at Southern Cross University, and an Honorary Research Fellow at both the University of Queensland and Menzies School of Health Research. She is the Co-Vice Chair of the World Federation of Public Health Associations Indigenous Working Group, and the Vice President-Elect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health at the Public Health Association of Australia. Alana pioneered the use of individual yarns with a think-aloud component, called the ‘think-aloud yarn’, and co-developed the Key Principles to Co-Design with First Nations peoples, which have informed the development of Cancer Australia's Australian Cancer Plan and will underpin its implementation. She leads a research program that centres around First Nations Australians traditional medicines and healing practices, with the aims of protecting and preserving these medicines for future generations and improving accessibility for all First Nations communities across Australia.
