  • The 5 Things You Need to Know Before, During and After IVF
    2025/02/05
Have you ever used Google Maps and been redirected midway via a better route? Think about this show as your personalized navigation tool for fertility and IVF, as Dr. Aimee shares the five things you need to know before, during, and after IVF to support yourself.

    1. Be clear on why you’re considering IVF. Why are you doing IVF?

    2. Realize your relationships may change. This is something I ask my patients to think about before, during, and after IVF.

    3. Develop a plan for unused embryos. When you’re going through IVF this is likely the last thing you want to think or talk about.

    4. Know that pregnancy isn’t always easy. Developing a support system is important during IVF and fertility treatment.

    5. Understand that your feelings may linger. The feelings you had when you had a hard time getting pregnant can sometimes continue during pregnancy, after pregnancy, and beyond.

    2025/02/04

Today on The Egg Whisperer podcast, my dear friend Dr. Jenna McCarthy is joining me to talk all about the most common IVF mistakes. Our intent is to share as much information as we can with you so you’ll go into an IVF cycle aware, empowered and feeling comfortable with what is going on. We want people to avoid these mistakes and also hear that they're common, they happen, and there’s always something you can do if you’re dealing with an issue.⠀

We’re talking about troubleshooting needle and syringe issues, the importance of not eating or drinking before your egg retrieval, timing of the trigger shot, sperm emergencies, and medication dosage issues and more. We’re basically talking about everything we’ve seen in our combined 20+ years of doing IVF. ⠀

  • How to Best Prepare for IVF
    2025/02/03

I may not be your fertility doctor, but it doesn’t matter where you live. If you’re thinking about or actively preparing for In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) then I’m so glad to have you here.

My intention is to help you get ready for IVF — regardless of who your doctor is or where you live. These are the tips you can apply to your situation to take an active role in your fertility care.

    Step 1: Know your diagnosis
    Step 2: Assemble your team
Step 3: Get organized & keep track of your files
Step 4: Understand medication side effects
Step 5: Understand your semen collection options
Step 6: Decide if you are going to do IVF with or without ICSI or PICSI
Step 7: Decide if you will genetically test the embryos
Step 8: Understand if you will be at risk for OHSS
Step 9: Prepare for the transfer

  • Environmental Toxicant Exposure and Your Reproductive Health with guest Dr. Kevin Osteen
    2025/01/31
I’m so excited that Dr. Kevin Osteen is joining me this week for the Egg Whisperer Show. He is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College. Since the 1990s, Dr. Osteen’s research program has focused on environmental endocrine disruptors and how they impact endometriosis. His laboratory developed “organ-on-a-chip” technology, which is a tiny plastic “chip” about the size of a USB thumb drive that mimics the workings of the microenvironment of a human organ. Dr. Osteen’s team created the first endometrium and endometriosis chip models. These “organ-on-a-chip” models provide a way to test and observe what happens in “normal” endometrium, and in those that have endometriosis. This technology changes the way doctors study this disease. Dr. Osteen and I are talking about the organ-on-a-chip technology, endometriosis, and endocrine disruptors, and reproductive health. I’m excited to have him on the show, and hope you’ll join us for this exciting and very timely conversation.

  • A Genetic Counselor Explains Genetics and Hereditary Disease for Fertility Patients with Dena Goldberg
    2025/01/30
Your Genetics are a key part of my TUSHY Method (Y = Your genetics) and I'm so honored to have Dena Goldberg (also known far and wide as Dena DNA) joining me today!

Some of the questions I know you have on your mind about genetics are:
Nothing came back on my 23 & Me test. I'm good to go, right?
Answer: Not so fast. 23&Me relies on "SNP testing," and only looks at "very specific bookmarks on very random genes." You'll want a more thorough test for preconception screening.

I don't have any history of disease in my family. Do I need to do genetic testing?
Answer: It's a good idea. There are syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome that are asymptomatic in 90% of people who are carriers. You'll want to know if you have those genetic markers before passing them on to your embryo and child.

Can you make sure my embryo doesn't have autism?
Answer: Autism is actually a description of a constellation of symptoms. So it's not an underlying condition in and of itself. There are hundreds to thousands of genetic causes to autism. We can catch some of these cases, but not all. Autism is multifactorial, meaning that many of these cases are probably caused by a combination of genetics and environment or in other words, nature and nurture together.

Thank you for joining me, Dena!

  • Sleep and Your Fertility with guest Dr. Sara Nowakowski
    2025/01/27
The relationship between sleep and fertility isn't something that's talked about very much. I'm excited to have sleep expert, Dr. Sara Nowakowski, joining me today.

We all know sleep is important, but did you know that sleep helps you recover from illness and rebound from life challenges? It also helps with mood regulation and decreases depression and anxiety, and it has been shown to help memory consolidation.

Plus, there is scientific evidence to show that sleep impacts hormones, has varying effects during the different phases of a woman's reproductive life (when trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and during perimenopause and menopause). Sara is sharing some of the findings about this, along with some tips on improving sleeping habits.

Sara Nowakowski, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and treats patients with insomnia and other sleep disorders at the Baylor Sleep Medicine Clinic. She is also a Research Health Scientist at the Houston VA, where she conducts research on sleep and women’s health.

Thank you for joining me, Sara! Read the full show notes and transcript on Dr. Aimee's website.
