  • S2 Episode 7: Lobbying governments to recognise the importance of fitness for long term health with Darina Dunne
    2024/09/26

    Today's guest is Darina Dunne.

Darina is a cornerstone in the Irish fitness community and has probably done more for the industry than any of us will ever know.

Darina and her husband Jamie are responsible for the filthy 150. This is Ireland's largest crossfit competition and at one stage was one of the biggest sanctioned Crossfit events in Europe.

They run multiple gyms around the country and now Darina is lobbying the Irish Government through the Irish Physical Activity Alliance. Their goal is to make gym memberships tax refundable as part of the Med1 health expense form. Darina is doing all of this while having a full time job in the pharmaceutical industry, she has unbelievable drive and is the perfect person to make this happen.

Darina is armed with all the facts around the importance of fitness and exercise to improve the population's health and how governments can actually save money in the long term by keeping people out of hospital beds and nursing homes, all while promoting health & exercise.

We are an ageing population and the numbers do not add up when it comes to the management of our elderly. We simply cannot provide the beds that are needed to meet the supply but Darina and the IPAA know that exercise, fitness and education are the only way to combat this problem in the long term.

  • S2 Episode 2: Keeping fitness simple, the journey of a Crossfit Games Athlete - Emma McQuaid
    2024/07/04

Today's guest is 6 times Crossfit Games athlete Emma McQuaid.

Emma is an extremely competitive athlete and has just recently qualified for the 2024 Crossfit Games in Fort Worth, Texas.

Emma has been competing in Crossfit for 10 years and qualified for her first games after only 2 years of training and she has been up there with the best ever since.

It hasn’t always been a series of highs for Emma. She talks about an unfortunate life changing accident to her now husband, which led her to leave the sport of quad bike racing. This was the sport that she grew up with and had competed in for most of her life. This resulted in losing a professional contract, however, it was this very change that led her on a path to a successful Crossfit career.

Emma has a very relaxed approach when it comes to her training, she just simply follows her plan and gets it done. If she’s done the work and somehow avoided injury, then that’s all she can do.

We’re excited to see Emma compete at the 2024 Crossfit Games and want to wish her the best of luck with the competition and prep which is now underway.
