  • Music therapy and expert quantum reports
    2024/11/13

Music therapy is increasingly recognised as a useful potential tool to work alongside physical and other forms of therapy for patients with serious injuries. Claimants or defendants in an injury litigation may wish to commission expert witness reports following music and creative arts therapies as part of calculating quantum.

Partner Chris Smith speaks to music therapist Kate Cropper in this latest edition of Soundbites, in what promises to be an insightful discussion around this topic. They will consider questions including:

    • What is neurologic music therapy?
    • Why would you use a music therapist as part of a therapy team?
    • How have perceptions around music therapy changed over time?
    • How is music therapy incorporated into rehabilitation and a legal claim?

  • Sports opportunities for amputees
    2024/04/30

Each month in 2024 a different host from our injury teams will speak to a leading figure in their field, exploring the latest developments in their area of expertise in a 15-minute bitesize session.

On Wednesday 24 April we kicked off with Chris Smith speaking to Alan McDougall, clinical director and clinical specialist prosthetist at Proactive.

This session covered the health benefits for amputees of getting back into sports, and what amputees can get involved with.

There remains an imbalance in participation in sport between those with a disability and non-disabled people. Statistics show that 18.5% of disabled people currently play sport on a weekly basis compared to 39.2% of non-disabled people: only 17.9% of people with a physical impairment participate in sport on a weekly basis.

  • Exploring developments in upper limb technology with Colette Shaw
    2023/12/22

Amputations to the upper limbs are typically less common and often more complex than those to the lower limbs and it is therefore unsurprising that the technology to replace and restore function in the upper limbs has been slower to develop.

However, over the last decade, there have been significant advancements in this area which have led to a range of bionic and microprocessor-controlled componentry to restore function and improve independence for those living with upper limb amputations.
