  • The CEAT method for running a good a dance-fitness class
    2024/10/22

The CEAT technique, developed by Ravi Sandhu, is a four-step method for guiding participants through exercise movements in dance fitness classes. The acronym CEAT stands for Cue, Escalate, Adapt, and Transition.

    • Cueing involves using verbal and visual cues to indicate what movement is coming next, helping participants prepare and stay synchronized.
    • Escalation is the process of increasing the intensity of the movement, particularly during the chorus of a song.
    • Adaptation involves the trainer observing the class and modifying the intensity levels to cater to different fitness levels.
    • Transition refers to changing the movement in a thoughtful and predictable manner, often using a holding step like marching on the spot.

The CEAT technique aims to create a seamless and enjoyable workout experience for participants of all levels.

  • Train at 4 levels for inclusivity, modifications and success
    2024/10/22

Ravi Sandhu, a dance-fitness and IT trainer, uses the 4 stages of competence model to teach dance-fitness to Punjabi music.

His 4 levels build up in complexity and intensity, starting with Level 1, where participants only move their legs, with hands on hips. This allows participants to focus on timing and gradually increase the size of their movements safely.

Level 2 incorporates hand movements while maintaining low energy. This helps participants coordinate arms and legs.

Level 3 introduces bouncing, increasing the intensity.

Level 4 is the highest level of energy and intensity. This model allows participants of various levels, ages, and abilities to participate in fitness.

  • Planning the workout is central to becoming certified
    2024/10/22

Dance-fitness trainers need to plan their workouts carefully, as demonstrated by the creation of a detailed workout plan.

This plan usually takes the form of a table, with columns indicating the time, exercise, and coaching points for each section of the music. The plan should be show a workout that is predictable, progressively building up in intensity, or ideally following a high-intensity interval format.

The workout plan serves as evidence that the trainer has thoroughly considered each element of the workout.

While the trainer may deviate from the plan during the class to accommodate participant needs and safety, the plan helps them demonstrate intent and thoughtfulness.

The assessor ultimately looks for signs that the trainer has a plan in place, avoids appearing unprepared, and can effectively lead the class.

  • Fitness training, just like Psychotherapy, is not a well regulated industry
    2024/10/19

There have been increasing calls for the statutory regulation of psychotherapists in England following a rise in reports of abuse. Currently, only clinical psychologists are statutorily regulated, while psychotherapists and counsellors can voluntarily seek accreditation from organisations like the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Similar concerns have been raised regarding the fitness industry, where accreditation through organisations like the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sports and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) remains voluntary. Unqualified individuals posing as fitness trainers can lead to physical and psychological harm, much like the risks posed by unaccredited psychotherapists. The public is urged to be wary of individuals, particularly those with backgrounds in dance performance, who claim to be fitness trainers without proper accreditation.

  • The changing stages of enthusiasm when starting a new fitness class
    2024/10/18

When participating in a new group fitness activity, individuals experience different emotional stages. Initially, there is excitement and enthusiasm, called the forming stage.

As the novelty wears off, participants will enter the storming stage, feeling frustrated or questioning the value of the activity. This is a crucial point where many give up.

However, those who persevere reach the norming stage, where the activity becomes part of their routine.

Eventually, they reach the performing stage, comfortably executing movements.

Ultimately, external factors may lead to the mourning stage, where participants disengage from the activity. It is important to recognize these stages and push through the storming phase to achieve the benefits of the performing stage.

  • "Choose" which music to exercise to
    2024/10/18

Dance performing, which is different to dance fitness, classes require extensive preparation by the choreographer, who typically selects trending songs for audience enjoyment rather than participant preference. These classes often use one or two songs repeatedly to teach choreography, limiting musical variety.

In contrast, dance fitness classes offer more flexibility in music selection. Participants can request specific songs, and trainers can often accommodate these requests due to the improvisational nature of dance fitness. This adaptability allows participants to enjoy a wider range of music, both new and old, making dance fitness a better choice for those who prioritise musical enjoyment.

  • Licence to Move: Punjabi Music and the Law
    2024/10/17

Most Punjabi music is copyright protected, meaning trainers, teachers and instructors, need a Music Licence to legally use it in dance fitness classes. This licence was previously known as a PPL licence and is also required by DJs, restaurants, and shops that play music for their customers.

The Music Licence Repertoire database lists all the music covered by the licence, and trainers can only use music from this database.

Broadcasting copyrighted Punjabi music over synchronous online platforms like Zoom is illegal as there is no licence for this type of usage.

YouTube is the only legal way to use Punjabi music for online dance fitness classes because YouTube's content ID system ensures the music owners receive royalties. Instructors should be aware of these licensing requirements to avoid legal issues.
