  • #195: Things Parents Do That Make Their Teens' Behavior Much Worse-Part 3
    2025/01/28

Today I'm re-publishing an episode from about 6 months ago that has been extremely popular (and apparently very helpful).

As the parent of a teen or tween we often feel frustrated (or even worried) about our kid's behavior. If they would just do what they're supposed to do - if they'd just listen - we wouldn't have any issues.

It's hard to imagine any of their behavior is actually due to the way we engage with them...the way we respond to their behavior.

In fact, so many of the arguments and struggles we have with our teenagers could be remedied by modifying our own behavior.

Join me in this second episode of four, to talk about some of the things we do that make our teens' behavior worse (and what to do about it).

Today I'll talk to you about how we make their behavior worse by a) failing to truly listen to them, b) being unable to manage our own emotions, and c) issuing unilateral rules and consequences.

Well, it turns out, it just might be. A lot our teens' unpleasant behaviors are unfortunately a side effect of the way we respond to their behavior to begin with.

  • #192: Does Your Innocent Teasing Feel Like Bullying To Your Teen or Tween?
    2025/01/14

Teasing is a big part of many parents' communication toolbox. But when it comes to teasing teens and tweens, it's easy to accidentally overstep.

Teenagers are notorious for misinterpreting parents. Their brains often don't hear what we think we say.

You may mean to tease them in a playful manner but they may hear it as criticism.

Listen today as I explain the difference between playful teasing and bullying and which topics you should delete from your teasing roster (because they can cause long-term negative effects).

    2025/01/07

Parenting is 1,000 times more stressful today than it was for our parents thanks to smart phones and social media.

And it certainly doesn’t help when there seems to be a new study or new book published weekly talking about how phones and social media are responsible for the decline in adolescent mental health.

What are you supposed to do as a parent? How do you make decisions about these issues for your teen and your family?

Join me today as I put things in perspective and give you some advice that will not only calm your nerves but help you manage these issues more realistically (and without the guilt).

  • #190: Are You Worried About Your Teen’s Angry, Rude, Entitled, Disrespectful Behavior?
    2024/12/31

You could be misinterpreting your tween or teen's unpleasant attitude, their emotional meltdowns, their angry tirades, or their rude, entitled, and disrespectful behavior (or you may be at least interpreting it from an uninformed point of view).

And the way you think about and interpret your teen or tween's behavior impacts how you feel about it and how you parent them.

So, if you don't truly understand why they act the way they do, you're probably not handling the situation for the best possible outcome. You could, in fact, be making matters worse.

Join me today to hear about some of the most common teenage behaviors that parents often misunderstand.

Our mindsets--the way we think about things--impact the way we feel and behave. And there are some particular ways of thinking that make it especially hard to parent teens and tweens.

Becoming more aware of a handful of these mindsets can help you change them (and therefore, change your feelings and your parenting behavior). Simple changes can make all the difference in your family dynamic.

Join me today as I discuss how to change your mindsets and the way forward with your teenager.
