このコンテンツについて

The DASL podcast is a project designed by Dr. Silvia Vicenzi to elevate the stories of underrepresented trainees at UCSD who have braved challenges and discrimination in their lives and careers. This platform aims to empower individuals by sharing their experiences and the strategies they used to navigate and overcome such obstacles. The objective is to provide insights and inspiration, with the anticipated outcome being a source of motivation and guidance for trainees facing similar challenges. DASL at UCSD has already made significant contributions to promoting diversity and enhancing rights within higher education. The DASL Podcast represents a forward-thinking approach to storytelling and mentorship that will make a lasting impact on our community.

We are extremely thankful to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Diversity Grant for funding the DASL Podcast Series, among many other projects (https://chanzuckerberg.com/). DASL stands for The Diversity and Science Lecture Series (https://www.ucsddasl.com/).

The podcast episode features an interview with Sofia Howe, a former student-athlete turned scientist whose journey into STEM is rooted in resilience, mentorship, and a deep commitment to science outreach. Sofia shares how her experience balancing athletics and academics helped her develop the discipline and mental toughness needed to navigate the challenges of graduate school and research. She opens up about a difficult early-career experience with a principal investigator and how she learned to advocate for herself, find supportive mentors, and rebuild her confidence during a pivotal moment in her academic path. Through that journey, Sofia discovered the power of creating inclusive, student-centered spaces, both in and outside the lab. Sofia reflects on her passion for science outreach, describing how leading lab tours and career events for high school students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, allows her to inspire curiosity and confidence in the next generation of scientists. Her experience speaking at the Athena event further affirmed the importance of building community among women in science and making space for diverse voices. Throughout the conversation, Sofia emphasizes that representation matters, and that diversity, whether in background, experience, or identity, is essential to innovation and progress in STEM. Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from showing up authentically, building supportive communities, and using one’s platform to uplift others.

The podcast episode features an interview with Dr. Monica Gonzalez Ramirez, a first-generation Mexican-American scientist who shares how the work ethic passed down from her immigrant parents shaped her approach to both life and academia. Monica reflects on the challenges of being a minority in STEM and how navigating systemic disadvantages helped her develop resilience, adaptability, and deep resourcefulness. She opens up about the emotional difficulty of changing labs or mentors, emphasizing that while these transitions can be scary, they often lead to better, more aligned opportunities. Monica shares how she learned to separate her identity from her academic output, reminding listeners that you are not your work—your value lies in who you are as a person. She also underscores the importance of maintaining personal integrity above all, especially in a research environment that may sometimes challenge those values. Staying connected to the original curiosity and purpose that drew one into science, she says, is key to remaining grounded and authentic. Monica also discusses her involvement in outreach initiatives, describing how empowering it is to be surrounded by curious female scientists who are committed to giving back. For her, being part of a community that serves others reinforces a sense of purpose and belonging in science. Throughout the conversation, Monica highlights the importance of building relationships based on mutual trust and support. Her story is a moving testament to inner strength, authenticity, and the importance of community and connection in academic spaces.
