  • Joshua Jones w/ USA Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program

    Joshua Jones, Program Director for the USA Health University Hospital Based Violence Intervention Program in Mobile, joins us in studio. Through a partnership with the University Hospital and MCHD, the City of Mobile has established the area's first Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP). Modeled after successful HVIPs in other parts of the country, this new initiative will help combat cycles of violent crime and retaliation by engaging crime victims as they are being treated in the hospital and connecting victims and their families to long-term services and support.

    Dr. Ashley Williams Hogue, Director of the University of South Alabama's Center for Healthy Communities, joins us in studio. Dr. Williams Hogue attended medical school at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. She completed a general surgery residency at the University of South Alabama, then a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Williams Hogue was selected as a Future Trauma Leader – one of the highest honors for a junior trauma surgeon – by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

    The stated Vision for the USA CHC is: The development of "enduring healthy communities" in metropolitan Mobile, the State of Alabama, the Gulf Coast region and the Southeastern United States by addressing the special needs of people the University of South Alabama serves. This includes the elimination of racial, ethnic and rural health disparities.
