Today's Bible Talks focusses on John 20:19-31 where Jesus shows up behind a locked door where his disciples cower in fear of the Jews who have just crucified their teacher. In these powerful verses, I see three results that Jesu offers as a result of what he says and does here. Those three results are: Believe, Receive, and Achieve. What? The crowds are casting palms and shouting "Hosanna, king of kings" and such as Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem. It's a parade. There is great excitement as he enters. The scene described by John is suggested to be the fulfilling of Old Testament prophecy and helps validate that Jesus is the promised Messiah. But, isn't it interesting out quickly things can change? Today, we look at an illustration Jesus gives his audience regarding a grain of wheat. I think it is a beautiful illustration about him...and us. But, if one reads this passage without due diligence, it could lead one to believe that we have to "beat ourselves up," to be a follower of Jesus and be loved by Almighty God. Is that true? If you are part of the LGBTQ+ community, regardless of your connection to the Evangelical church personally, I am sure you have heard all the stuff. We hear about abomination and burning in the pits of hell. And for some of us, it has resulted in a high level of Spiritual Trauma. I get it, I had to work on that heavily for a good portion of my life and now I help people almost daily do the same. But, I am excited about our text today. In this very familiar bit of Scripture, I think it helps us understand a lot about our relationship and future with the God of the Bible. And if you are a queer Christian, this one is for you. The turning of the Temple tables by Jesus is a familiar to many people, even those not raised and educated within the church.
