This paper, 'Democratising the Teaching of US Politics' was given by Peter Finn of Kingston University on Sept 13th 2023.

Drawing from a recent book chapter 'Democratising teaching: student votes and module case studies' published in the Active Learning Network volume '100 Ideas for Active Learning' (University of Sussex Open Press, 2022), in this workshop Dr Pete Finn will present a method for allowing student to feed into decisions around module content.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the internet and social media was overflowed with both accurate and inaccurate information about the disease, resulting in confusion and the spread of harmful messages online. This roundtable event will answer the following questions:

• What lessons have we learned from the COVID-19 outbreak? How might these help us cope with the next pandemic?
• Should we be more worried about an infodemic or a pandemic? Is there any distinction anymore?
• Is it possible to have healthy scepticism in a pandemic?
• What insights can the arts and humanities, and the social sciences provide for understanding pandemics?

Recent opinion polls have suggested that optimism concerning expectations of the future is declining. This shift has been attributed to climate change, equity, diversity and inclusion in society, projections of the future standards of living, and trust in political leadership. The event will explore the anxieties and opportunities Millennials, Gen Z, and others have with regards to these issues.

History, myths, memories, and monuments each tell their own stories. This event will focus on how history is interpreted and represented in the US and the UK. The panellists will discuss how ‘History, Mythologies, Memories, Monuments’, and narratives on both sides of the Atlantic influence how history is taught, perceived, and portrayed, as well as used to mould current political rhetoric and future ideas. More broadly, the event will cover issues facing the US and UK in domestic, trans-Atlantic, and global contexts, including asking the essential question: what is the value of democracy?

Caroline Leicht  is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton, researching gender, media and politics. Her PhD project examines gendered representations of presidential candidates in political satire. Prior to joining the University of Southampton, Caroline worked as a reporter and editor for various media outlets and was a lead reporter for the 2020 US presidential election coverage at German broadcaster ZDF.
