本田：そうなんですか。その店にはまだ行ったことがないので、ぜひ行ってみたいです。

宮本：このジムからも遠くないし、店が広いから予約もしなくていいし、「上海軒」に行きましょうか。

本田：はい、そうしましょう！

宮本：おなかもすいたし、本田さんと話すのも楽しみだし、すぐに着替えて行きましょう！

留学生のアレックスさんは、日本に来て1年になります。学校の先生に「スピーチコンテストに出てみませんか」と言われて、出場を決めましたが、不安でいっぱいです。うまく話せるようになるために、まず、発音の練習をすることにしました。毎日30分、シャドーイングをするようにしています。それから、良いスピーチを書くために、毎日ニュースを読んだり、聞いたりして、自然な日本語を学ぶようにしました。そして、たくさんの人の前で話すのは緊張しますから、間違えないように、先生と一緒に何回も原稿を読む練習をしたり、緊張で失敗しないように、大きな声でゆっくり話す練習をしたりしました。コンテストの前日、練習のために10人の友達の前でスピーチをしてみました。今日までの練習のおかげで、緊張せずに話せるようになっていました。聞いてくれた友達も、みんな応援してくれました。いよいよ、コンテスト本番です。アレックスさんはステージに立って、大きく深呼吸をしました。そして、「私が日本に来た理由」というタイトルでスピーチを始めました。「私は、日本の文化を学ぶために日本に来ました。もともと興味があった茶道と剣道についてもっとよく知るために、部活に入りました。部活のメンバーとたくさん話せるようになりたかったので、毎日日本語を勉強するようにしています。そして・・・」スピーチが終わると、大きな拍手が聞こえて、アレックスさんはほっとしました。そして、「これからも、いろいろなことに挑戦するために、日本語をもっとがんばろう。」と思いました。

大学一年生のひなたさんは、カフェでアルバイトを始めました。今日がはじめての仕事で、とても緊張しています。先輩の真宙さんが、まずコーヒーのいれ方を教えてくれました。「次のお客さんが来たら、私にコーヒーをいれさせてください！」ひなたさんは、やる気満々です。「うーん、でもお客さんに出すコーヒーを作る前に、ちょっと練習してみようか。」と真宙さんは何度か練習させてくれました。「違う、違う、まずはここにコーヒー豆を入れて…」　「あ、だから、そのボタンを押す前にここを…」 ひなたさんは、手順がなかなか覚えられません。「もう、何度も同じことを言わせないで」と注意されてしまいました。ひなたさんは、はっと思い出して、ポケットからメモ帳とペンを取り出すと、「すみません、今教えてもらったことをメモさせてください…」と言って、急いで紙に書きました。次に、この店で一番人気があるたまごサンドの作り方を教えてもらいました。「手順もメモできたので、一度私に作らせてください！」少し時間がかかったものの、形も味もうまく仕上がりました。「もうすぐお昼のピークタイムになるんだけど、コーヒー担当か、たまごサンド担当か、それとも接客か、何に挑戦してみたい？」 「接客をやらせてください！」ひなたさんは注文を聞いたり、お皿を下げたり、いろいろなことをやらせてもらいました。ピークタイムも無事に終わって、ひなたさんの今日のシフトは終わりです。「今日はお疲れ様でした。」　「色々教えてくれてありがとうございました。次は、もっと任せてもらえるようにがんばります！」

ある春の日の午後、小さな町に住んでいる祐希さんは、一人で家から少し離れた公園に散歩に行きました。公園は人が少なくて、静かでした。祐希さんはうろうろと公園を歩いて、太陽の光でキラキラ光る池の水や、空に浮かぶふわふわの雲を見て楽しんでいましたが、花壇の前にある素敵なベンチを見つけたので、そこでのんびりすることにしました。公園に来る前に、カフェでランチを食べておなかがパンパンだったので、ベンチに座るとすぐにうとうとしてきました。そのとき、木のうしろで何かがゆらゆら動いているのが見えました。祐希さんはどきどきして、「今のはなんだろう…」とキョロキョロしていると、小さい白猫が木の陰から出てきて、とことこと歩いてきました。猫はベンチにぴょんと上がって、祐希さんの横にちょこんと座りました。祐希さんが「こんにちは」と小さな声で言うと、猫も「こんにちは」と返事をしました。祐希さんはびっくりしました。「今、猫が話した…？」そう思った瞬間、ニャーという猫の鳴き声が聞こえました。はっと目を開けると、祐希さんは一人でベンチに座っていて、隣に猫はいません。「夢だったのかな…」と祐希さんはつぶやいて、足元を見ると、白い毛が一本落ちていました。祐希さんは、くすっと笑いました。
