Compassion Heals Both Us and Them
“As compassion and sympathy flow from us to any person marginalized for whatever reason, wounds are bandaged—both theirs and ours.” - Richard Rohr
Nearly every day for the last two plus years, I’ve selected a verse or a quote as a prompt for reflection, meditation, and prayer. I first set this quote aside nearly a year and a half ago.
It expresses a profound spiritual truth, but I don’t find it particularly easy to explain. It’s not quite a paradox, but it feels like something close to one.
So, I’m not going to try to explain it. I’m only going to give witness to its truth. The harvest we reap in most cases is in no small part dependent on the seeds we sow and the cultivation work we do.
As we open our hearts and minds to seeing, hearing, understanding, and feeling the struggles of our neighbors, as we reach out to show genuine compassion and support, we ourselves experience the same.
I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
