We Don’t Know

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” - John 16:12

We want to know. We want certainty. We want to be in control. Not knowing the what, where, when, how, and whys makes us afraid. It terrifies many of us. And we seldom make good choices when we are driven by fear.

The reality is this: our best knowledge and understanding is partial, incomplete, and sometimes incorrect. “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” (I Corinthians 13:12)

We are freed from our fears of uncertainty when we acknowledge them. We don’t know, can’t know, and may never know on this side of the grave. We just have to do best we can with what we have, living faithfully with humanity and humility.

We don’t know. But there’s one who knows us. So we trust our lives to the One who knows us best.

We Are Seen

“What are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” Psalm 8:4

Compared to the scale and scope of the universe, we are not even as big as a single grain of sand on the beach. The longest human lives lived are not even as long a candle flicker against the backdrop of eternity.

Yet the ancient witnesses declare that all of us are fully seen and fully known by the creator and sustainer of the universe in whom we live and move and have our being. We matter. Our lives matter. Our relationships matter.

Just as the tiniest creatures in the sea are fully known by and sustained in the ocean, so we are in God. We are known, every scape, every scratch, every scar, every hair, every breath.

Hagar in her toughest moments came to know that God is the one who sees us. God is the one who knows and loves us. We are seen by God.

Love Makes Hope Possible

“hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts…” - from Romans 5:5

There’s a direct correlation between our capacity to love and our ability to hope.

When our hearts are filled with God’s love, we understand that we are loved unconditionally, without hesitation or reservation. When our hearts are filled with God’s love we understand that everyone and everything is loved by God.

It is this love that causes us to desire the best for ourselves and for everyone else. We want to see redemption and restoration and not revenge and retribution. Love inspires us to make choices and take actions that make our hope for better lives and a better world possible.

Even if it happens that things don’t work out exactly the way we hope they will, we will never be ashamed of anything we do when we are centered in love and guided by hope.
