In this BBC radio full-cast dramatisation, Jane Austen introduces us to the handsome, clever and very flawed Emma Wodehouse. Mansfield Park was Jane Austen’s third novel, and is often stated to be her most mature. The complex love entanglements, mature situations, and familial drama are common in Austen’s literature, but Mansfield Park is one of the most complex of her novels. The book has been lauded for its challenging of the conservative values of the age, and for its masterful artistry which cleverly disguises the social commentary within.

For Elinor Dashwood, sensible and sensitive, and her romantic, impetuous younger sister Marianne, the prospect of marrying the men they love appears remote. In a world ruled by money and self-interest, the Dashwood sisters have neither fortune nor connections. Concerned for others and for social proprieties, Elinor is ill-equipped to compete with self-centered fortune-hunters like Lucy Steele, while Marianne's unswerving belief in the truth of her own feelings makes her more dangerously susceptible to the designs of unscrupulous men.

Lady Susan attempts to further her plans to induce Frederica into marrying Sir James Martin, a nobleman, but Frederica's obvious distaste of the match is a cause for further disruption.

In January 1817, Jane Austen began work on Sanditon, but died a few months later, leaving it unfinished. Jane Austen's early novels are a comic portrait of characters and society. Pride and Prejudice depicts late 18th-, early 19th-century England where the social class system was very rigid. Behavior was very important, especially for women who were hoping to find a husband, and having good behavior meant sticking to the right manners and right forms of address. Everyone watched everyone else and noted even tache slightest changes in mannerism, so it was very important to use the right manners all the time. This applied to women much more than to men.

Fanny grows up as a misfit, not truly a member of the Bertram family, but too genteel to feel comfortable with her parents.
