Bettauers berühmtester Roman ist eine Satire auf das zur Zeit seines Erscheinens 1922 hochaktuelle Thema Antisemitismus. In der Geschichte ordnet ein fiktiver Politiker der Christlichsozialen Partei die Vertreibung aller Juden aus Wien an. Die Wiener Bürger feiern zunächst die Vertreibung der Juden, aber ihre Einstellung ändert sich, als die Theater in Konkurs gehen und Kaufhäuser, Hotels und Kurorte finanziell leiden. Der wirtschaftliche Niedergang ist so weit verbreitet, dass eine Volksbewegung entsteht, die die Rückkehr der Juden fordert.
