Stephen Crane was born 1st November 1871 in Newark, New Jersey, and was the eighth surviving child out of 14. Incredibly, he began writing at the age of four and was published several times by the age of 16. Crane only began a full-time education when he was nine but quickly mastered the grades needed to catch up and move forward. Although educated at Lafayette and Syracuse, he had little interest in completing university and was keener to move on to a career, declaring college to be ‘a waste of time’.

The Red Badge of Courage is Civil War novel by the author Stephen Crane (1871-1900). The story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who deserts the battlefield. Overcome with shame, he yearns for a wound, a "red badge of courage", to atone for his cowardice. When his regiment once again engages in battle, Henry becomes the standard-bearer who carries the flag.

A Tent in Agony is a humorous story of a man who looked after a tent when his companions went to fetch supplies. He was attacked by a bear and ran into the tent. The bear got entangled as the tent collapsed around it which caused quite a spectacle.

An interesting story about how a boy goes to school with new mittens his mother wants him to protect. To do so he cannot join in a snowball fight with his friends with parents less scrupulous about clothing and the like. The boy ultimately gives in, gets in trouble with his mother, is made to eat alone, attempts to run away much but only makes it to their cold shed.He then gathers his forces to leave for California - wherever that might be.

These are Stephen Crane's three most famous short stories. He also wrote others of great value, but these are the ones that stand out the most. "The Open Boat" is considered Stephen Crane's finest work and one of the great short stories of all time. The story begins with four men in an open boat, subject to the vagaries of the sea after their ship went down. The Captain, though injured, retains control over the boat and its occupants by force of habit and uncanny skills. In this trial, he proves his worth, putting his men first, guiding them at every step of the way.

"An Ominous Baby" is perhaps the most unusual of the other ten Crane stories Simply recorded. It deserves to be right up there with the top three.

"The Veteran" features Henry Fleming as a grandfather, many years after he appeared as the 18-year-old Yankee first-time soldier in The Red Badge of Courage. He retells the story succinctly and honestly about how he ran from his first battle as so many did. His grandchild is alarmed, as children are when they learn that adults are not perfect in what they do.

This is the third of the best Stephen Crane short stories, with "The Open Boat" and "The Blue Hotel" being the other two. The story starts in an interesting way as the older sheriff has gone to another town to marry a not so young and not so beautiful woman who he is obviously devoted to.

A Dark Brown Dog is a classic, an endearing story about a boy, his dog, and their unconditional love for one another.
