The tale of spirited farmer Bathsheba Everdene and the three suitors who vie for her attention is the first of Hardy’s Wessex novels. Passion and tragedy abound against the backdrop of a 19th-century rural idyll, as Hardy sets the tone for his subsequent forays into the life and love stories of this fictional county.

A very early novel by Thomas Hardy—beautifully written but obviously written when he was a young man who was curious about why women fall in love and why men feel so mesmerized by them. It really is a charming story and like the more famous stories, it is set in the idyllic countryside of West England. The descriptions of the landscape are very affecting.
