Im Februar 1920 in München als Nachfolgeorganisation der "Deutschen Arbeiterpartei" gegründet, entwickelte sich die NSDAP innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einer Massenorganisation mit zuletzt 8,5 Millionen Mitgliedern. Bei Kriegsende besaß damit jeder fünfte erwachsene Deutsche ein Mitgliedsbuch der NSDAP. Mit Hilfe der Partei und ihrer Gliederungen SA, SS, Hitlerjugend und NS-Frauenschaft sowie der angeschlossenen Verbände, zu denen auch die Deutsche Arbeitsfront zählte, verfügten die Nationalsozialisten über einen Machtapparat, der das gesamte Leben in Deutschland kontrollierte.

Im Frühjahr 1899 verlässt der Novize Georg Lanz vollkommen überraschend für seine Mitbrüder das Stift Heiligenkreuz. Für Monate verliert sich seine Spur im Dunkeln.
