When Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, forcing the U.S. to enter WWII, MAC was 23 years old. He had graduated with honors from high school, served two years in the Merchant Marine, and had a year of college under his belt. There were no mission limits for a pilot in the Pacific during World War II; unlike in Europe, you flew until it was time to go home.
