大分県南西部山間、竹田市や豊後大野市は、日本書紀や豊後国風土記に、土蜘蛛にまつわる伝承が数多く記されている地である。竹田市久住町の宮処野神社（みやこのじんじゃ）は、景行天皇が土蜘蛛征伐にあたり陣を構えた地とされる。そこから南に行軍したところ、土蜘蛛の抵抗に遭い、一旦退却した地が、同じ竹田市の城原八幡社（きばるはちまんしゃ）、その南西、やはり同じ市内の、阿蘇外輪山の麓の禰疑野神社（ねぎのじんじゃ）が、三人の精強な土蜘蛛、ウチサル、ヤタ、クニマロの本拠地で、三人はここで天皇に討たれたという。また、豊後大野市の知田（ちだ）は、アオ、シロという二人の土蜘蛛を討ち、血が大量に流れたので「血田」と呼ばれたのが地名の起源という。一方、豊後大野市には、景行天皇を食事でもてなした、シノカオキ、シノカオミという土蜘蛛の伝承もある。なぜ、この地域にはこんなにも土蜘蛛の伝承が多いのか。そのヒントは、山を越えた、熊本県側にあった。肥前国風土記は、禰疑野の土蜘蛛と同じウチサルという名の土蜘蛛が、熊本市近郊の山にいたと伝え、それを討ったのが、市内の健軍神社の祭神・タケオクミノミコトという。この二つのウチサル伝承地の中央には、阿蘇山が聳える。そこは、神代より戦国を経て今まで続く、阿蘇氏の治める地であった。九州土蜘蛛伝承の真相に迫る。

本州の北端近く、下北半島の付け根近くに位置する、青森県東北町。 ここには県内最古級の歴史を誇る、千曳(ちびき)神社がひっそりと鎮座する。 日本神話には「千曳の岩」というものが登場する。死した妻・イザナミを求め、 冥界へ下った夫・イザナギが、醜く変わり果てた妻から逃げて、 怒り追って来た妻を足止めする為、この世とあの世の境界に置いた岩である。 即ち、「魔」を入り込ませぬ為の境界防衛の岩であり、「塞の神」「道祖神」として、 村落の入口などを守る神として崇められた。千曳神社の神格も同様である。 ただし、この北辺の地にあっては、単なる村落の防衛が目的ではなかった。 ここは朝廷の勢力が辛うじて及ぶか及ばないかという地域であり、 蝦夷(えみし)を「魔」として、「魔」を祓い、朝廷を守る目的があった。 ゆえに、神社の創建は、征夷大将軍・坂上田村麻呂によるとされる。 そして、坂上田村麻呂がこの地に来て、「日本中央」と岩に刻んだという、 奇妙な伝説が、平安時代に生まれ、都の貴族らの歌に詠まれた。 その岩が、千曳神社の社殿の下に埋められていたというが、いつしか行方不明となる。 明治天皇の行幸時、政府の命令により捜索されるも見つからなかったその岩は、 戦後になってから、偶然発見され、今は近くの施設にて保存されている。...

平成25年に式年遷宮が行われた、伊勢の神宮。それが内宮・外宮より成ることは一般にも知られているが、その他に多くの別宮・摂末所管社があり、全て合わせると125社となる。由来は様々だが、その多くは、神宮創祀の際、地元の神が従って、神宮に土地の譲渡や貢納を約束する話となっている。その別宮の一つ伊雑宮が、志摩市に鎮座する。この伊雑宮は、伊勢から離れたリアス式海岸に近いという地理的条件もあって、別宮の一つでありながら、独立的傾向が強かった。明治の神仏分離を経てもなお、北極星の信仰に関わる祭祀が続けられ、江戸時代には、伊雑宮こそが神宮の発祥、中心であるという偽書の発行に関わり、幕府より弾圧を受けるという「まつろわぬ」歴史もある。そもそも伊勢とは、神話の時代に遡れば「まつろわぬ」土地だった。また、中世においても「まつろわぬ」ものの噴出する土地であった。朝廷、国家の宗教的中心地に、なぜ「まつろわぬ」要素があるのか。事象の「裏側」から見た、伊勢というものの深層を掘り下げる。語り:高橋御山人 聞き役:盛池雄峰
