宮崎県西部、険しい山の谷あいにある秘境・椎葉村。伝承によれば、壇ノ浦で敗れた平家が落ち延び隠れ住んだが、源頼朝の命で那須与一の弟・大八郎が追討にやって来る。が、狩猟や焼畑など、山の暮らしで精一杯で、戦闘意欲を捨てた落人達を見て、便宜を図り、ともに暮らしたという。大八郎は、落人達のために、平家繁栄のシンボル・厳島神社を勧請さえした。さらに、平家の女官である鶴富姫と結ばれ、一子設けたという。大八郎はやがて頼朝の召還命令により椎葉を去るが、鶴富姫は娘に婿を取り那須姓を継がせ、その子孫が代々椎葉の庄屋を継いだ。その那須家の江戸時代の邸が今も椎葉に残っており、「鶴富屋敷」と呼ばれている。しかし、この鶴富屋敷や、椎葉村北部の十根川集落は、斜面に石垣を築いて屋敷を構えており、まるで山城に見え、十分に戦闘意欲を感じさせる。十根川には、大八郎御手植えと伝わる樹齢八百年の杉が聳える十根川神社があるが、これは彼らが再起を図ることを誓った記念碑のようにも見える。神仏習合色を残した神楽や、呪術性の強い正月行事、猪のお供えなど、山深い地ゆえの独特の文化が見られ、柳田國男も「後狩詞記」を著し「日本民俗学発祥の地」と言われる椎葉。その源泉たる「落人のエネルギー」を探る。

熊本県南東部の五家荘は、険しい山に囲まれた秘境。壇ノ浦で敗れた平家が落ち延び隠れ住んだが、源頼朝の命を受けた那須与一の息子・小太郎が、追討にやって来た。それを知った鬼山御前なる平家の女官は、仲間を討たせまいと、何とか小太郎を引き留める。彼女は元の名を玉虫御前といい、那須与一が屋島で射た扇を、舟上で用意した女官であった。やがて二人は結ばれてここで暮らし、その子孫の那須家は今も続いている。彼女を祀る神社もあり、巨乳で乳の出も良かったという伝承により、乳の神として崇められている。また、五家荘という地名の由来は、五つの集落にそれぞれの庄屋がいるためで、うち三つが平家の子孫を名乗る。残り二つは、菅原道真の子孫という。藤原時平の讒言により左遷された道真は、大宰府で憤死したが、復讐を恐れた時平は二人の子らを討とうとした為、五家荘へ逃れ土着したと伝わる。こうして「落人の隠れ里」となった五家荘だが、やがて人口が増えて食糧が不足し、隠れ住むのも限界となり、武力で名を馳せた阿蘇大宮司家へ同盟を申し出て、武装化する。一般には戦を忘れて平和に暮らしたというイメージのある「落人の里」だが、実際には武装し、血筋の尊さを伝え、いつか再興する事を夢見続けた、覇気と執念に満ちた集落なのだ。「落人」の実態に迫り、その現代的意義を考える。
