The year is 1981. Eighteen-year-old Jonas Quartermain falls in love with archeology thanks to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Three years into his four-year degree, he is given the opportunity of a lifetime: work as a real archeologist on a dig in Egypt. He travels out of Ohio for the first time in his life and is shocked by the cultural differences in Cairo. He begins work and is quickly bored out of his mind. Lucky, or perhaps unlucky for him, old bones and ancient jewelry are not the only things waiting for him in the African nights.

Dante fought and died to give humanity a chance to escape from an overwhelming alien threat. They stole the sun and harvested the solar system for resources. He watched as the ship Humanity's Light fled into the dark beyond the solar system, his body hurtling away with the shock wave from Earth's destruction. Then he woke up in a new body, face-to-face with one of the Naga. He was given the worst news he had ever heard: Dante was expected to fight in an arena for the entertainment of the Naga. Now, he has to fight not just for his life, but his very soul.

Dante's fears have been confirmed. He is part of a massive conspiracy, a project that was made centuries before to create people who could use magic. Now, he's more monster than man to his peers. He stands twice the height of an average man, he can bend metal with his hands, and he's immune to the poisonous blood of the Naga.

Dante was there when the sun disappeared. He led the survival of a group of office workers as storms ravaged the planet. Then, quiet fell, and they waited for rescue. When the military arrived, they discovered they weren't alone. After darkness fell, the office tower became infested with strange aliens resembling ancient mythological monsters. Now, the group of survivors have taken refuge in a hidden military bunker in the mountains.

Jonas thought he was done with danger when he returned from Cairo. He had won against an ancient evil possessing his professor, and his eyes had been opened to the world of magic, which was all around him, but hidden from everyday life. College called, and he was ready to be normal again. With Lily by his side, and the prophetic dreams seemingly gone, life was looking good.

Joining up with the survivors as ice coated the planet, Dante must struggle to survive in a cold new world. But as they explore the tower and scavenge for supplies, they soon discover the weather isn’t the only problem. The expected bodies aren’t there...and something’s moving in the dark.
