Michael recounts his first relationships in the closet while growing up in rural South Dakota, how he first realized he was gay, and the aftermath of coming out to his family.

This coming out story centers around the shame and uncertainty that hovers over LGBTQ+ youth growing up in religious homes in which the religion discredits their sexuality. Coming to terms with religion, acceptance, and sexuality is a difficult task that many of face or have faced. It's comforting to hear Michael's words of self-acceptance and decision to be free.

In this week's episode, Matthew describes the highs and lows of growing up in the closet in a conservative-leaning, religious environment. He explores his first encounters with same-sex relationships, the impact that YoungLife had on his adolescence, and how his outlook changed through YouTube.

I came out as gay through posting a video on YouTube. Doing so completely changed my life, but not before many experiences shaped who I am today. I hope this story instills hope, that there's life after homophobia, and that love in the world far outweighs bigotry.
