  • An update on season four
    2024/10/06

Welcome back to When Football Began Again! Here's an update on season four and a plea to help me turn this podcast from award-nominated to award-winning!

I've been nominated for two gongs at the prestigious Football Content Awards. When Football Began Again has been shortlisted for the Best Podcast - Premier League and Best New Content Creator. These awards are 50% panel vote and 50% public, which is where you come in!

If you love the show, please take a couple of minutes to vote for us at https://footballcontentawards.com/voting/ so that we're in with a chance of taking home some silverware at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (keep that joke to yourself, please...) in November.

Voting closes on Sunday 13th October at midnight so please vote before then. In the meantime, I'll be back with some new episodes really soon.

I'm also now part of the Podomedy network! Check out their incredible stable of comedy podcasts here.

Enjoyed the show? Please subscribe, leave us a 5* review, subscribe on YouTube for video episodes and additional content and pass the pod to anyone who you think will enjoy it. • 1998/99 revisited with Marv Dickinson & James Cook
    2024/05/27

Host Carl Jones is joined by actor, comedian and Manchester United fan Marv Dickinson and comedia, Aston Villa fan and host of World Cup of World Cups and World Cup of Euros, James Cook to relive the 1998/99 season.

There's the return of David Beckham from France '98 as public enemy number one, Paulo Di Canio pushing over a referee, John Hartson volleying a teammate in the head. Roy Evans budges up for Gerard Houllier in the Liverpool dugout, Big Ron takes his place in the wrong one and Brian Kidd waves goodbye to his seat on the bench at the beginnings of one of the greatest seasons recorded in club football to take Blackburn down instead.

Dwight Yorke narrowly avoids being shot by John Gregory, David Unsworth avoids him altogether and Duncan Ferguson becomes the first (and last) player to represent Newcastle United with an Everton crest tattooed on them.

There's also some great trivia, hilarious anecodotes and a slightly sombre greatest ever Premier League Cameroonian for reasons that will become apparent.

  • Man United's Treble-winning season with author Rob Carless
    2024/05/20

Today's guest is author Rob Carless who shares his memorable matches from 1998/99. We also cover his new book, Three Games In May, breaking down Manchester United's historic Treble - none of which were won untul those final three games.

In between remembering Fergie's men's historic achievement, Rob dips into some of his favourite moment from the season, including the inspirational captaincy of Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs scoring a solo goal for the ages, Jaap Stam's difficult initial adaption to life in the Premier League and David Beckham finding redemption post-France '98.

Rob also remembers some of the memorable moments for his own beloved Aston Villa, including losing Dwight Yorke to Old Trafford, topping the league at the halfway point of the season and an unfortunate festive-themed air display where we update on how a parachuting Santa Claus recovered from a rather dramatic accident.

We'll also reveal the winner of the Premier League's greatest ever Burundian based on your votes from last week's show.

Enjoyed the show? Please subscribe, leave us a 5* review and pass the pod to anyone who you think will enjoy it. You can also find us on social media where we'll have Twitter polls, highlights from the show and nostalgic clips from yesteryear.
