  • E45: Heartbreak, Ugly Ducklings, and the Economic History of the 20th Century + $CHRS
    2024/09/17

This week's episode of Wall Street Wildlife kicks off on a somber note as Krzysztof shares the heartbreaking loss of his beloved dog, Bunk. It's a poignant reminder that investing is ultimately about creating the freedom to spend precious time with those we love. Every moment counts.

Buckle up though, in this episode we also dive into the wild world of "ugly duckling" investments – those overlooked companies with the potential to transform into magnificent swans. We'll explore the contrasting views of Warren Buffett and a successful microcap investor, highlighting the risks and rewards of both, and why either strategy can deliver market beating returns.

We take another hard look at one of Krzysztof's ducklings, Coherus BioSciences, a company now navigating supply chain disruptions on top of its already myriad risks. We'll analyze the impact on its stock price and discuss the potential implications for investors. Plus, Luke is now a shareholder, so that's double trouble!

But that's not all! We also touch on the upcoming U.S. election and how understanding the contrasting economic philosophies of the candidates could help you make informed investment decisions. We preview our upcoming conversation with Professor Bradford Delong, author of Slouching Towards Utopia: An Economic History of the Twentieth Century.

And finally, we're thrilled to announce the launch of our Patreon page! • E43: Renewable Energy > Coal + Snowflake and the “Too Hard to Understand” Pile
    2024/09/03

🚨Badger has gone wild and the law tries to reign him in — with what success? Monkey, meanwhile, studies political theory and comes to the conclusion that nuanced political conversations require carefully defining the terms — and who has time for that? We reap what we sow.

⏳Is Badger a true long-term investor? Luke analyzes his long-term holdings and finds his average holding period to be 3.5 years, with a few outliers, including Enphase $ENPH and SolarEdge $SEDG. We discuss the costs and benefits of taking the long view.

⚡️Renewable energy sources are set to eclipse power generated by coal for the first time ever. Is nuclear fusion still too science-fiction? Monkey continues pounding the table for Eos $EOSE supported by claims about battery storage becoming a burgeoning trillion dollar industry.

❄️Is Snowflake $SNOW Too Hard to Understand and a Dodo set for extinction? Monkey shares his story from being a Bull to disappointment to kicking the company into the “Too Hard Pile” which is a useful investing structure. Badger wants to put Airbnb $ABNB in the same bucket but Monkey calls it the broken thesis — we discuss the difference.

💔We read a listener comment making the case for Badger’s compassion and grace — with a chilling and devastating conclusion. (you can tell who wrote the episode blurb this week - 🙄)

🍌Monkey teases a few upcoming new buys for the King of the Jungle Portfolio challenge — Round 1 — which ain’t over till its over.

  • E42: Six Skills to Sharpen your Investing Claws
    2024/08/27

If you’ve ever wondered about the difference between Badger and Monkey, here it is: Monkey spent his weekend getting a haircut, while Badger was playing poker until 6am in a literal castle on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Whose team are you on now?

In this week's episode, Luke buys Coherus $CHRS January 2026 options on the strength of Krzysztof's sales pitch in episode 41. “Deep Value” seems to have been the magic phrase that made his claws tingle, despite the “likelihood of failure still being high”, a fact rebutted with sound reason, logic and facts. We'll agree to disagree, but it's a high risk investment, however you look at it!

@iancassel, Founder of MicroCapClub.com recently shared an excellent presentation on the "Six Skills of Stock Picking". We discuss all six, brought to life with lessons from our decades of mistakes and successes:

    🎯 Identifying Actionable Ideas

    🎯 Valuation

    🎯 Buying and Sizing

    🎯 Holding Due Diligence

    🎯 Selling

    🎯 Survival!

Krzysztof also reminisces about Jon Stewart’s righteous grilling of Jim Cramer during the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, and Stewart’s current beef with the media spouting economic nonsense about inflation and the politicization of anti-price-gouging policies. Moral: know your sources and make sure you trust their motivations.

We’re getting many more comments and questions from our growing community — keep up the good work, beasties.

  • E41: Investing in Coherus Biosciences $CHRS; plus Waymo Woes and a Disney Debacle
    2024/08/20

Krzysztof explains why he’s now heavily invested in a tiny $140 million dollar biotech company, Coherus Biosciences $CHRS. There are two ways to make money in the market, and both have to do with a gap in perceived value. Coherus had very encouraging second quarter results, but an analyst downgrade sent the stock tumbling regardless. Are the downgrade reasons based on how the wall street game is played, or something more fundamental to the company broken?

Also in this week's episode, Luke is unhappy with the state of the UK as a place for his investing dollars. Does his pro-USA investment thesis support American exceptionalism? Or does technology know no political boundaries and you have to go where the intellectual capital lives? One notable exception: UK listed fintech, Wise $WIZEY $WISE. Self-driving cars are the next revolutionary frontier, and Tesla $TSLA is not the only game in town. But the other player, Google’s $GOOG Waymo, is experiencing significant growing pains that are literally keeping people up at night. Badger challenges Monkey to ride in a driverless Waymo car in Austin without getting killed, to the tune of a 1:10,000 payout. Disney’s $DIS corporate cruelty? A tragic case of when corporations lose their humanity - it's sad to see the House of Mouse behave so heartlessly in the face of real tragedy. Krzysztof bemoans the widening cap in the King of the Jungle portfolio challenge and begs Badger for mercy for a few extra days, but leniancy comes at a price! It's not over yet though, and the Japanese Carry Trade might still have further market mayhem to come, so those on Team Monkey ought not despair… yet.

  • E40: Recession Realities - Unpacking Economic Indicators, Techno-Feudalism, Selling Airbnb, AXON vs EOSE bet
    2024/08/13

Are we in a recession or not? What is the Sahm Rule Recession Indicator? Why does Claudia Sahm herself not trust its conclusion at the moment? Are we no longer in a capitalist system? A preview of an upcoming conversation about techno-feudalism and the contradictions of capitalism. Blame Monkey for this one. Did Luke get lucky selling Airbnb $ABNB before earnings based on local anecdotal evidence from his visit to the Paris Olympics? When and what is anecdotal evidence good for? We consider some examples: $AAPL $NFLX $TSLA. Luke reaches 12,000 followers on X on the strength of his investing success and meticulous record keeping. We answer a few questions from listeners, including what company could we not pull a trigger on despite wanting to: $META $PLTR $AAPL. Badger provides an update on Axon’s $AXON latest fantastic earnings. Meanwhile, Monkey explains why he thinks $EOSE will be the better investment in two years’ time despite his own enthusiasm for $AXON. • E39: Special Black Monday August ’24 Emergency Edition!
    2024/08/06

While Luke comes home from front row seats at the Paris Olympics, the market tries to rain on his fur by having a historical meltdown and a global margin call.

We discuss the $VIX volatility index and just how rocky Monday morning was relative to the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID scare.

What caused it all? Krzysztof explains the Japanese carry trade, how it's tied to leverage and why NVIDIA $NVDA potentially seems to have been a trade as much about AI as it was a trade taking advantage of free money loans given out by Japan.

No strangers to the upsetting emotions of extreme market drops — we outline practical steps to take advantage of panic, and to make sure you’re not one of the lemmings getting crushed by fear, and reacting instead of acting with discernment. Have you tried the investing buddy system?

Krzysztof also voices a complaint: Bitcoin $BTC did not pass his test for store of value, while gold most certainly did. Is this a short term issue or is Bitcoin not a true decoupled asset from the global financial system? Badger wants to know how this failed performance will affect Monkey’s BTC stack.

With good tech earnings from $GOOG Google and $AMZN Amazon and Apple $AAPL, why have there been such massive price swings both up and down? It’s another sign the systemic risk is real and that the market at this moment is far from an efficient one. We therefore examine a few fixed income strategies such as short-term Treasuries to help you protect your capital.

Have you checked out Luke’s Axon $AXON deep-dive? It will convince you to pay attention to this excellent company as an antidote to all the fear - but even this one is wildly over-valued, and that's a recipe for danger in a fragile market!

  • E38: Beyond the Balance Sheet - US Debt and the Dark Side of Short Selling
    2024/07/30

Krzysztof returns from a Hobbit house getaway while Luke gets ready to head to Paris for the Olympics; tales of travel spark some short-term trauma about lost luggage and Crowdstrike’s $CRWD hand in making lots of people maddeningly upset. If that’s not spicy enough, we briefly discuss historical revolutions and national identities sparked by the Olympics’ opening ceremony’s raw political themes - or is it just a ton of fun that's really only supposed to make sense to the locals? We discuss whether the US is facing a debt crisis worse than 2008, highlighting alarming insights from Balaji Srinivasan about the staggering $175 trillion debt level. Lots of scary charts and difficult decisions to make based on the data, which you can see in full at: https://balajis.com/p/americas-175-trillion-problem We also consider the ethical fine line in short selling, focusing on the case against Andrew Left of Citron Capital for alleged securities fraud and the ethics of market manipulation and finance journalism. We also address a viewer’s question on selling investments with outsized growth, discussing different approaches to this "nice-to-have" problem. Badger has been hard at work in his burrow yet again, this time composing a Deep Dive on Axon Enterprise $AXON, one of his favorite companies; in this episode, he shares a short highlight about the company’s margins and financial strengths. We conclude with an update on the King of the Jungle portfolio competition, emphasizing the importance of compound interest and consistent long-term investing, and how quickly adding $100 a month can add up — Badger even breaks out a trusty compound calculator quizzing Monkey on just how much money it’s possible to make if you get started early and just follow a consistent approach.
