  • Ep. 95: Dead for a Ducat
    2024/09/13

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 95th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings.

While this set covers discs 1626 to 1650 in my Classic Collection, my Fuzzy Feature highlights a bit of a deep dive for this effort. From discs 1474 and 1480, I talk about "Hamlet 2" starring Steve Coogan and Catherine Keener.

Our regional Capitol Shakespeare troupe presented "Hamlet" this summer, and I include comments from Derek Pich and Schatzy Eichmann, the actors who portrayed Hamlet and Ophelia. The theatrical theme traces as well from a Great Performances 2023 presentation of "Hamlet" I archived from PBS.

Plus I'm readying a role in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" for TruNorth Theater, running the weekends of Sept. 20 and Sept. 27, so I'm in a theatrical state of mind. More info available at https://www.trunorththeatre.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/trunorththeatre.

In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD), covering discs 1626 to 1650, I talk about archiving dedicated VHS tapes with episodes of "Grey's Anatomy," "Medium," "The Simpsons," "Arrested Development," "Dollhouse," "Brothers & Sisters," "The Office" and "Vampire Diaries," this set featuring "Sleep Alone" by Bat For Lashes: https://bit.ly/4cZdsN8 Also spotted, a bizarre Powerade commerical called "Sport is What You Make It": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAXf9_3pgqY

In my Current Collection, I touch very briefly on shows I've archived direct to DVD, but my priority was new digital media I'd acquired, box sets of "The Magicians," "Warehouse 13" and a couple seasons of "The Umbrella Academy."

Also, a box set of Rodgers and Hammerstein classics turned up among my mom's effects when she passed this summer, and I'm looking forward to watching them. I included a clip or two from "Rigoletto" my mom recorded for me for a show I was directing in 2001, "The Importance of Being Earnest." My mom and dad's love and support of me and my work in community theater over the years are treasured memories.

Hiya! I'm Terry J. Aman, host of VideoFuzzy, home for media, commentary and nostalgia. In this singularly theatrically focused installment Ep. 95: Dead for a Ducat, I leverage comments on a deep dive from my classic collection, "Hamlet 2," as a springboard to chat about other "Hamlets" I've encountered, including Bismarck's Capitol Shakespeare, Great Perfomances on PBS "Hamlet" from 2023, and insights from local actors who took on the roles of Hamlet and Ophelia so powerfully this summer, Derek Pich and Schatzy Eichmann. I'm also taking the stage myself as George in a local production of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" the weekends of Sept. 20 and 27 with Bismarck's TruNorth Theater. For all this and so very much more, add, follow and subscribe to "VideoFuzzy," wherever you get your podcasts.

  • Ep. 94: Into Every Generation
    2024/06/30

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 94th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings, and with this installment, titled "Into Every Generation," I celebrate seven years of doing so.

Helping to mark the occasion, in my Fuzzy Feature I chatted with longtime friend and friend of the pod Marc Bailey, also known as Grailwolf, to talk about the 1992 release of Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the FX presentation of which turned up on disc 1604 in my classic collection. We talked about the movie, the TV series it gave rise to, the spinoff of "Angel" and the comic series, as well as other Whedon projects, and farther reaching ramifications of the production.

In honor of this film turning up in my cataloging project, I have expanded the mystical center of my media collection to include Joss Whedon productions, in my newly renamed Joss Under Murph Studios Challenge, linking shows in my collection through "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," "Six Feet Under," Ryan Murphy productions and/or Joss Whedon productions. A few connections become quite a bit clearer and just make more sense with the acknowledgement of this expansion, which suggests it was a de facto center all along.

In Cross Connections I explore some of the impacts of this expansion, certainly through my Fond Reflection farewell to the movie Buffy's Watcher character Merrick, played by Donald Sutherland. I trace other connections through "Criminal Minds," "The Closer," "NUMB3RS" and a two-part "Alice in Wonderland"-themed Syfy miniseries starring Caterina Scorsone titled "Alice."

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, for this set covering discs 1601 through 1625, I talked about a significant second-season episode of "Rescue Me," a documentary recounting 40 years of the Broadway production of "Hair," the pilot epiosde of "Criminal Minds," Syfy's miniseries "Alice," and a bunch of episodes from "Arrested Devleopment," "South Park," "The Simpsons" and "24," alongside a bunch of music videos as well as the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, hosted by ... oh. Sean "Puffy" Combs.

In my Current direct-to-digital recordings, I talk about Pat Sajak stepping down form hosting duties on "Wheel of Fortune," podcaster Terry Geo's 2023 stage production of "Blink: A One-Man Gay Rom-Com," that link available here: https://bit.ly/45DbBeV and a spoiler-y look back at the first season finale of "Doctor Who," which I include at the very end of the show in case you're still avoiding spoilers.

  • Ep. 93: Trudy's Gift
    2024/05/28

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 93rd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings.

In my Fuzzy Feature, I talk about the two-part series finale of "Monk," which turned up in my cataloging efforts this time. In Cross Connections I traced ties through "Monk," "Fringe" and "Moonlighting," and highlighted Golden Thread connections with Larry Clarke and Sharon Lawrence.

In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD), cataloging discs 1576 to 1600, I found where I'd appeared on local noon shows promoting community theater, clip posted to VideoFuzzy's Instagram. Also, "Fringe" – both here and in my Current Collection – "Medium" "Monk," "Criminal Minds" "Prison Break" and "NUMB3RS" and animated shows like "American Dad," "Venture Brothers," "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law" and "Tom Goes to the Mayor." I found some racy commercials and talk about the marketing concept of "floym." Plus, music videos (check out Jack Johnson's 2005 "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" here: https://bit.ly/3WFdK7q) and episodes of "The Twilight Zone."

In my Current Collection, I added a BUNCH of material this time including I already mentioned "Fringe" up there, I added seasons 4 and 5 to my collection, plus the entire series of "Moonlighting" and a couple different ties to "Medium" and "Fringe." Plus comments on "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," "Spider-Man: No Way Home," "The Batman," Alanis Morrisette's recent turn on "Austin City Limits," and more from the new season of "Doctor Who."

I close out with a couple unique productions. I explore the Indigo Girls' 1995 VHS release "Watershed: 10 Years of Underground Video" callback to sister podcast "VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack" Ep. 10: Caramia, some of the cool things I found there. Then my hubby, Ralph, and I recently took in the "Wheel of Fortune LIVE" production at Prairie Knights Casino and Lodge with cohosts Bob Goen and Daisy Wang and announcer Cody Dove, who was really leaning into that "Better Call Saul" credit. It was a great time and they put on a fun show.

Comments on a "Moonlighting" and "Fringe" binge and "Doctor Who" is absolutely off on new adventures, we took in "Wheel of Fortune LIVE," plus, bonus commentary from sister podcast "VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack," I talk about a 1995 Indigo Girls VHS release "Watershed: Ten Years of Underground Video." • Ep. 92: Reunion
    2024/03/17

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman marking my 92nd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. My Fuzzy Feature for this installment, titled "Reunion," I talk about the first four entries I found in that 2005 FOX series.

I also share Book Reports on new releases "The Fury" by Alex Michaelides and "The Busy Body," the long-anticipated debut murder mystery by "All About Agatha" podcast host Kemper Donovan. Both are fun reads in very different ways and both come highly recommended. Kemper's podcast "All About Agatha" can be found on Apple Podcasts at https://bit.ly/43j4hnB

With my Classic Collection, cataloging discs 1551 through 1575, I officially have fewer than 1,000 discs to catalog in my classic collection. In this set I found the first episode of "The Tonight Show" aired following the news of Johnny Carson's death in 2005. Also, several music videos and late night show clips, Tim Daly's private eye drama "Eyes," and episodes of "Desperate Housewives," "Grey's Anatomy," "Alias," "LOST" and "Fringe," and an "Ugly Betty" where Justin's class elects him homecoming queen as a joke, but he takes the win in a totally unexpected direction.

In my Current Collection I dig into the "Doctor Who" 60-year anniversary specials — and oh yes, there will be spoilers. Also, "Death and Other Details," "Fargo," "Surrealestate," "Feud: Truman Capote and the Swans," "Moonlighting," "Obituary" and "The Floor." In What I've Been Watching, I've taken in the Capitol Shakespeare production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" as well as a couple of movies: "Argylle" and "Wonka." Fun!

  • PROMO: Ep. 92: Reunion
    2024/03/14

Hi, I'm Terry J. Aman, host of "VideoFuzzy," my blog and affiliated podcast slowly making my way through my media collection and sharing it with all of you. Changing things up a bit for episode 92, I wanted to step back and celebrate a fellow podcaster, from "All About Agatha," host Kemper Donovan's debut murder mystery "The Busy Body." A longtime student of the form, it's easy to tell the close read he's taken with the works of queen of crime Agatha Christie, combining what inspiration he's found there with modern twists like selfies, influencers and Kickstarter campaigns for a truly uncanny adventure drawing a plucky presidential hopeful and her ghostwriter into a murder investigation. Together with episodes of "Reunion," remembering Johnny Carson and from hulu, "Death and Other Details," I talk about multiweek USA Today bestseller "The Busy Body" as well as mystery novel "The Fury" by Alex Michaelides in this, my latest entry, a mystery-themed episode of "VideoFuzzy," available wherever you get your podcasts.
