When there is more than one person, everything begins and ends with communication. Conflicts, misinformation, cultural division, and even wars start with a failure to communicate. Communication was immortalized in the Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke, where the chain gang boss said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate." It is a leading problem underpinning poor organizational effectiveness and is cited in employee surveys as one of the top three issues with leaders. Most people are not educated on how to communicate and take communication for granted. They don't recognize the barriers that impact communications. This is a Basic Model of Communication. When these principles break down, communication fails leadership, organizations, and even whole cultures. That is the power associated with interpersonal communication.

There are a lot of communication elements in creating a persuasive speech. In this podcast, we learn some communication theory that helps promote a persuasive speech. We will review communication theory and apply that theory to evaluate Jon Stewart's speech. Jon gave a speech criticizing the GOP for failing to pass the Veterans healthcare bill. The GOP first voted to approve the bill, but after a minor revision that didn't impact the bill, a procedure revision, the GOP voted against the bill. Jon Stewart spoke passionately about the GOP's failure to pass the bill. His speech went viral and aroused Americans from all political perspectives. The Veteran's health passed on the third vote. Many attribute the passing of the bill to Jon Stewart's speech.

Federal law allows a street gang member to have federal charges added to a crime. The definition of a street gang member under this federal statute is similar to militias, white supremacists, and cult members. It seems reasonable to create a law that lumps all these organizations as domestic terrorists so federal charges can be added to such crimes as trespassing on federal property. If they were a defined domestic terrorist group member, they could have federal charges added to the misdemeanor charge, raising the jail time considerably.

Incongruity explained is a contradiction. In this podcast, we will see two powerful men, Arizona's Speaker Russell Bowers, and past President Trump, create a dichotomy resulting in confusion and uncertainty. Influential leaders perceived as credible can use deception to change incongruity into believable facts. Incongruency can hurt interpersonal communication. Using lies to convert incongruity into plausible points, even though it is a facade, can devastate society, as evidenced by Donald Trump. Trump used lies, which were incongruent with the facts, to create a cult following of millions. America continues to struggle with his incongruent behavior.
