  • Pioneer Christmas plus FBI Raids Donald Sutherland
    2024/12/20

This week, Kate muses about some miscellaneous matters that impacted on Christmas traditions in early Haliburton. Plus, we lost Donald Sutherland in 2024 - an actor who's been called the best in his craft never to have won an Oscar. So, Paul brings a brief story of Donald's background and carrer, including the time that he and his wife's residence in LA was raided because of suspected activist activity with the Black Panthers - including allegations of buying hand grenades for the group.

Kate Butler is the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Paul Vorvis is the host of the Your Haliburton Morning Show 7 - 9 a.m. Fridays on Canoe FM 100.9 and streaming on your devices. • ToquePic plus Great Canadian Train Robberies
    2024/12/13

This week, tells the story of making the most of winter in the Highlands and how in the 1960's and 70's there was a huge winter festival, including the festival's mascot - ToquePic. Plus, Canadians tend to downplay our history and it often seems to pale when compared to our colleagues from south of the border in the US. It may surprise our listeners to hear that Canada had its share of great train robberies in the late 1800's and early 1900's featuring dramatic heists, man-hunts, and shootouts.

  • Partying in Haliburton plus Bodysnatching
    2024/11/29

This week, Kate has the story of the Golden Slipper Dance Hall just outside Haliburton Village from the mid-1930's to the late 1970's. It was a happening place with live music and open late 7-days a week. Plus, Paul has a brief history of bodysnatching in Canada in the 1800's. There was a catch-22 at the time. Medical students were required to do dissections of cadavers in order to learn to be surgeons, but the law meant they could be punished for dissections except for bodies of executed criminals - and they were in short supply. Enter the 'resurrection men' aka bodysnatchers who found ways to fill the need and outrage the public.
