My kids have grown up in a daycare that their grandmother runs, which is nothing but fabulous.  However, when grandma is in charge, you get certain perks, even though grandma tries super hard to be completely equitable.  In the first two kids' lives, we send them off to daycare so they can come to the understanding that they are not the center of the universe before going to kindergarten.

This dang pandemic has changed things for the third kid.  Daycare rules make it so that kids basically have to stay in batches so they don't cross-contaminate other batches of kids.

Since the third kid can't go to preschool, I've had to up the academics with the baby. I have been teaching my three-year-old her letters.  I feel dumb because it really doesn't take that long and I really let the big kids down.

We just make super tiny little games out of learning the basics.  She walks into the room, I ask her what a certain letter is, what sound it makes and then we go about our day.  It's that simple.  What a relief!

  • Kid Time Hack: Addressing Issues With a Coach
    2021/04/28

After playing his first game with his new team, my 10-year-old was super frustrated and emotional.

We're not the type of parents who handle things for our kids.  In fact, we're quite the opposite.  We teach our kids how to handle things for themselves.  It's awful, and difficult, and terrifying, but I'm in the business of raising successful adults, not coddled kids.

My husband helped my son to rehearse what he wanted to say to his coach.  My husband hung back and let our son speak to his coach on his own.  He explained his frustrations and explained why he was sad after the game.

My son's coach was super awesome!  He listened, took the feedback, and responded with actions that my son could take to improve.

Result:  my son felt empowered and had the absolute all-time best practice.  His little spirit was lifted and we all had a great week.  I highly suggest letting your kid learn to advocate for themselves.

  • Futureproof
    2021/04/21

The main topic of the book was automation and artificial intelligence with the thesis being that every single person and job on the planet is replaceable by a machine.

The author discusses all of his reasons for coming to this understanding, but moving beyond the doomed future, Roose makes some powerful recommendations to help you survive the coming revolution.

The book says that our best tool to fight the machines is our humanity.  Humans like human-made things.  There is still more value in the things that are crafted by people.

In my own chimney sweeping business, we are trying to create a blend of automation and humanity, with an emphasis on humanity.

We have chosen automation in much of the office administration and humanity in the customer-facing roles.

The point of this lesson is to encourage you to bump up your humanity as you think about your business automation.

  • Suggested Reading for Easily Changing Your Habits
    2021/04/14

Suggested by a speaker a few years ago, I read Dan Millman's book, "Way of the Peaceful Warrior."  It was a transformative fictionalized account of the mind shift the character took to come to the understanding that he was one with the universe.

This book was the first time I was exposed to these larger, universal lessons, and that in itself was pretty transformational.  I plan to read it again soon.  I imagine that it is one of those books that you read multiple times and I expect that each time I read this book I will be experiencing something new and important and I'll be able to draw new lessons.

The second book I read was "The Little Book of Big Change" by Amy Johnson.  I picked up this book because I have been on this quest to be the best version of myself.  In this book, the author uses the same concept, being the larger self, to describe a simple way to combat urges.

Combined, I highly suggest these two books to work through any unwanted habits you're carrying around.
