  • #12 The Confession: Our Worst Fears Came True
    2024/03/06

This episode is unlike any we've done before. It's about the night that changed everything for me and my wife, Mary June, after 23 years of marriage. We're opening up about our journey through porn addiction, infidelity, love, and ultimately, healing.

I've shared previously about my coming to Christ and finding healing in God's love. I knew that I had to come clean and confess the truth of who I had been. I knew I had to face my biggest fears. Fears I had lived with for decades. This episode tells the story of the confession that set us on a path of healing and rediscovery. Mary June and I dive deep into what it took to rebuild our marriage from the ground up: the fears, the tears, and the experiences that have woven us back together.

This isn't just our story. It's an invitation to anyone out there wrestling with their own shadows, searching for a glimmer of hope. It's messy, it's painful, but it's real. And it's proof that no matter how lost you feel, transformation through love and truth is possible.

I'd be honored if you shared this journey with us. And if our story strikes a chord with you, please drop me a message on Instagram @urban.amish.

  • Episode #7 What I’m learning from my Amish neighbors | Building mastery and a return home
    2023/12/28

At 47 years of age, I realize that I have strayed from my path, and have not truly developed mastery in my life. Twenty years ago, I left the Amish community that I grew up in, but returned last summer to live and work among the Amish in the very house I helped my dad build when I was a teenager.

Moving back to my hometown with my wife and teenagers has given me a fresh perspective on the values and patterns of life that the Amish have maintained, and I'm learning from them as I pursue a return to the true path that was laid out for me.

In this episode I talk about what I'm learning and how I'm applying it to my life in my pursuit of mastery and the good life. I talk about work ethic, AI, technology, and the realization that the Kingdom of Heaven is not a future destination, but a reality that is at hand, manifesting itself around me as I live, work, and raise my family in the land of my forefathers.

  • Episode #6 | Personal Growth & Transformation | How to Create Sustained Change In Your Life
    2022/08/11

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Urban Amish Show! In this episode I’m joined by my wife of 21 years, Mary June to talk about how to implement sustained change in our lives. Lasting change that leads to personal growth, transformation, and a stronger foundation on which to build our future.

We both know what it’s like to try and fail to change our habits and our thinking, and we also have learned what it takes to make these changes stick.

One of the changes I want to make in my life is to create and publish these episodes on a more regular schedule. For as long as I’ve known that I have something to say, I’ve also faced resistance in my creative endeavors. Some of you will know what I’m talking about. We can be our own worst critic and our own worst enemy, trapped by what Stephen Pressfield calls “Resistance”.

One thing Pressfield says about Resistance in his excellent book “The War of Art” is that resistance can be used as a navigational beacon. Resistance is so resolutely opposed to us producing what we are called to produce that we can actually reverse engineer it, and use it as a navigational beacon, letting it point us towards our calling. The thing we are most afraid of is the thing we must face in order to move forward.

I’ve certainly found that to be true in my life.

Let’s face it. It’s impossible to hide the fact there is a three month gap between episodes #4 and #5 of this show. That’s resistance.

But the only way through our fears and our resistance is, well, through them. So here we go.

In this episode, Mary June tells the story of how she was violently attacked in an attempted robbery, and how she used that fear and trauma as fuel in her personal journey. How she confronted that fear and moved towards love, into greater service for those around her, training for a marathon and raising tens of thousands of dollars to support a cause very dear to her heart. You won’t want to miss it.

As your host, my role is one of a ‘player / coach’.  I’m on this adventure with you, and I’m paying attention to what works and what doesn’t, and I report back to you, hopefully giving you some valuable insights that you can use to improve your own health & fitness, your marriage, your parenting, your career, or whatever it is you’re working to improve in your life.

If you find this useful, please comment below and let me know, share this with someone else who may enjoy it, and make sure to subscribe on your favorite podcast platform or on Youtube!

    2022/07/21

My wife Mary June and her younger brother Jon Lantz join me on Episode #5 of the Urban Amish Show. Jon is a beloved uncle to our kids and he’s someone I deeply admire. Jon has Muscular Dystrophy, and is confined to a wheelchair. He’s an intellectual and public speaker.

Jon’s experience of life as someone who has been struck by a terrible disease is so insightful and inspiring. His faith is an inspiration to me, and I was so happy that he agreed to join me on the show.

We talked about what its like to be bound to a wheelchair, helplessness, surrender, faith, courage, and much more.
