  • S2, E20: SXSW Behind-the-Scenes with the Author of “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security,” Sherri Goodman
    2025/05/13

This week on “The Tie-In,” Zena and Mark met up with Sherri Goodman, another attendee of SXSW, and they talked about her new book. “Threat Multiplier: Climate, Military Leadership, and the Fight for Global Security” is a window into how the Government is addressing a huge threat to our way of life: Climate Change. Sherri’s experience as the Pentagon’s first Chief of Environmental Officer has given her great insight into the steps we must take to address the issue and change minds.

We’re so honored to bring your attention to an inside story from a real expert that’s intricately connected to such important topics. You can order Sherri’s book here: https://islandpress.org/books/threat-multiplier#desc

This episode is all about change. In addition to our engaging chat with Sherri, Zena and Mark reflect upon the changing language behind climate activism. People and organizations are approaching things with terms like “opportunity space” that will hopefully make things more accessible. We need to work together to build a better world, and you listening to our podcast helps us do that.

  • S2, E19: SXSW Behind-the-Scenes with the Creator of “El Peso Hero” and Founder of Texas Latino Comics, Hector Rodriguez
    2025/05/06

This week on “The Tie-In,” Zena and Mark share another episode from the 29th floor while surrounded by the gorgeous skyline of Austin, Texas, and during SXSW no less. They’re chatting with Hector Rodriguez (@el_peso_hero), the Creator of a fascinating comic book series about immigration and more called “El Peso Hero.” He’s also the Founder of “Texas Latino Comics,” and the comic book industry isn’t shying away from climate action. Efforts are being made to showcase work in digital spaces and embrace more climate friendly printing services. This is a fascinating episode for anyone interested in hearing about the hurdles original IP’s must go through in order to get produced as a film or TV show. Hector is currently undergoing that process, so who knows, you might see “El Peso” saving lives on screen! There’s so much to be gained from supporting climate stories like “El Peso,” and they just celebrated a very successful kickstarter.

We love spreading the word about art we want to think will make a difference, and you can make a difference in Hector’s life by checking out some of his comics here.

  • S2, E17: SXSW Behind-the-Scenes with Producer Janice Overbeck
    2025/04/22

This week on “The Tie-In,” Zena and Mark share another episode from the 29th floor while surrounded by the gorgeous skyline of Austin, Texas, and during SXSW no less. Janice Overbeck is bringing documentary filmmaking into the future, strategizing about how to best communicate calls to action and promote climate messages. She’s been connected to such fabulous work as “Plastic Earth” (2023), “The Last Bumblebee” (2024), and the upcoming “Capturing the Carbon” series. Janice was even gracious enough to share an exciting trailer for her work, so if you stick with this interesting conversation, you’ll get to see and/or hear, depending on how you’re listening in, a sneak peak at what’s coming up for her. We learned a lot about how the creative forces behind documentary film can promote climate action by telling real stories.

We look forward to seeing what important facts, places, data and concepts her production team can shine light on next. You can check those out for yourself by keeping up with any and all updates on their website: https://2050pictures.com
