Poe claimed in his essay, “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846), that he wrote “The Raven” through a logical and methodical process, aiming to evoke a specific emotional effect — melancholy. He chose a raven as the central symbol because of its ominous presence and association with death. The iconic refrain “Nevermore” was chosen for its sonorous and impactful effect and to this day remains a symbol of unrelenting despair. Some critics believe Poe’s writing of The Raven was influenced by his personal struggles, including his poverty and his wife Virginia’s battle with tuberculosis.
