  • Mastering Social Media and Video with JAC Digital Media’s Jordanna Cheifetz
    2024/12/19

Today, Jon and Lisa are talking social media and video (and dogs) with Jordanna Cheifetz, the founder of JAC Digital Media. She shares her journey of establishing a thriving business that specializes in creating engaging social media content. She explains her unique "content days," where she works with clients to produce multiple high-quality videos efficiently and stress-free. These sessions are designed to empower clients with confidence, ensuring their personalities shine through to their audiences.

Jordanna's inspiration for starting JAC Digital Media in 2017 was twofold: a need to pivot her career and recognizing a gap in the market for comprehensive digital services that include content creation, copywriting, and audience engagement. She also navigates the complexities of operating her business across two countries, balancing her Canadian roots with her current base in Michigan.

We talk about the growing importance of video content in social media. Jordanna emphasizes the critical role of the first three seconds in grabbing viewers’ attention and the shift from polished, manicured posts to authentic, relatable content. Video allows businesses to connect with their audience at the viewer's own pace, building trust and familiarity over time. Both Lisa and Jon share their own experiences with video, highlighting its power as a long-term engagement tool.

Jordanna also talks about her workshops, where she teaches business owners how to optimize social platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. She plans to expand into more specialized topics, such as video editing. When asked about her services, Jordanna recommends her affordable "content day" package as an excellent starting point for businesses.

  • Nikunj Jain and Tahura Holly of Corqueboard
    2024/12/05

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we meet Tahura Holly and Nikunj Jain, founders of Corqueboard, a digital advertising platform designed to replace traditional cork boards in local businesses. Tahura shares how her time in India inspired her business journey; after moving there in 2017 and immersing herself in the jewelry trade, she returned to Michigan and launched Festive Essentials, a brick-and-mortar store in Hamtramck specializing in Indian jewelry. As she promoted her store, Tahura noticed idle screens in local shops, which sparked the idea for Corqueboard—a network of digital screens where local businesses can easily upload and display ads, specials, and announcements. Nikunj brought his technical expertise to the venture, helping create an efficient and user-friendly platform for business owners.

Corqueboard operates through a simple setup: a small device (similar to an Amazon Fire Stick) connects to a screen, enabling businesses to display dynamic content that can be managed with a QR code. This ease of use, including the ability to upload content directly from a smartphone, means even non-tech-savvy business owners can take full advantage. With Corqueboard, businesses like restaurants or retailers can monetize their screens by selling ad space to other businesses, turning idle screens into passive revenue generators. Pricing is customizable, so each business can set its own ad rates, ranging from free community promotions to premium ad placements.

The couple discusses how their complementary personalities enhance their business partnership, though they face typical challenges of working together. They rely on honesty and clear communication, blending Nikunj’s outgoing nature with Tahura’s introverted approach to manage both their personal and business dynamics. They credit their different perspectives for helping refine Corqueboard’s user experience, with Tahura advocating for simplicity and accessibility in the interface.

Tahura and Nikunj’s recent addition to the Royal Oak Chamber has been met with enthusiasm, particularly with the launch of Corqueboard Mobile. This battery-powered, weatherproof digital sign offers a modern alternative to traditional A-frame boards, allowing businesses to display eye-catching digital menus or promotions outside. They’ve already seen local interest, especially from businesses seeking innovative ways to attract customers.

Listeners interested in Corqueboard can find more information at corqueboard.com or contact Nikunj directly at (313) 378-3893. Both Tahura and Nikunj are excited to help local businesses in Michigan thrive by enhancing visibility through Corqueboard’s growing digital network.

  • Yoga for Every Body: Meet Lindsay Madison of Visions Incorporated
    2024/11/21

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we connect with Lindsay Madison, founder of Visions Incorporated, a yoga studio with a unique focus on accessibility and community inclusivity. Lindsay shares her inspiring journey, starting with her early career in retail management in Chicago, where she rose to a high-powered role at Bloomingdale’s by age 21. However, her career path shifted unexpectedly when she experienced a sudden and rare loss of hearing due to a sinus infection. This challenging health event ultimately led her to yoga, which became both a personal refuge and, later, her profession.

After years of practicing and teaching yoga, Lindsay returned to Michigan, where her journey took on new meaning when her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. Lindsay guided her mother through gentle exercises and breathing techniques post-surgery, which reinforced her mission to make yoga accessible to people of all backgrounds and health conditions. Today, her mother, a cancer survivor with one lung, regularly participates in Lindsay’s classes, embodying resilience and inspiring others in the process.

Visions Incorporated, Lindsay’s studio, offers both in-person and virtual classes that cater to a wide array of needs and levels. Classes range from brief, targeted sessions to longer, full-length practices, available through Zoom, on-demand, and free videos on YouTube. Lindsay provides options for all, including those who may face financial challenges, and she offers a variety of packages and a “pay later” option for live classes. Her approach is deeply personal; she emphasizes the physical and mental benefits of yoga, helping participants build strength, calm their minds, and practice breathwork to manage daily stress.

Lindsay also teaches chair yoga at senior communities, aiming to expand this offering through a 2025 goal of training other instructors in her inclusive teaching style. For those new to yoga, Lindsay reassures that flexibility and experience aren’t prerequisites; her classes are about self-connection and adapting yoga to individual needs, creating an inviting space for anyone interested in starting their practice.

Lindsay credits the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce for helping her make valuable connections within the community and expresses excitement about growing her impact through these networks. For those interested in learning more, she can be reached via her website, visionsincorporated.com, and on social media, where she responds personally to inquiries.

In summary, Lindsay’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and community spirit, and her dedication to accessible yoga has fostered an inclusive environment where everyone—from cancer survivors to yoga novices—can find their place on the mat.

  • Jordan Burns of Honest Insurance Brokers
    2024/11/07

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we interview Jordan Burns, owner of Honest Insurance Brokers, who takes us through his journey in the insurance industry, starting with how he launched and sold his first business during the pandemic. Jordan shares how he moved from life insurance and financial advising into property and casualty insurance, eventually deciding to strike out on his own, driven by a desire to offer more personalized services to a wider range of clients.

Jordan explains the difference between insurance agents and brokers, emphasizing how brokers can work with multiple carriers, giving clients better options for home, auto, and other types of coverage. This flexibility sets him apart, allowing him to tailor policies based on individual needs and avoid the "auto-renewal trap" many consumers fall into. He describes his approach to educating clients by presenting them with a few different coverage options and walking them through each one. This transparency is a core part of his business philosophy, which is reflected in the company name, Honest Insurance Brokers.

We also dive into important topics like when to make a claim and the implications it can have on future premiums. Jordan emphasizes the importance of consulting with an agent before filing a claim, as many people regret filing small claims when the payout doesn’t justify the potential increase in premiums. He also talks about the CLUE report, a tool used in real estate to check prior insurance claims on a home—a crucial step for homebuyers to avoid surprises.

Toward the end of the episode, Jordan touches on Michigan's complicated car insurance laws and the significance of Qualified Healthcare Coverage (QHC), which can allow drivers to opt out of some auto insurance coverage and save money. He shares insights into how to navigate the crowded insurance market, pointing out that while big companies advertise to build brand awareness, lesser-known carriers might offer better rates because they don't spend as much on advertising.

In addition to his business insights, Jordan is deeply involved in his community. He’s been instrumental in the Young Professionals Group within the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, fostering networking opportunities for young professionals in the area.

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Siri Pipat, the owner of Kacha Thai Market, to discuss her passion for authentic Thai food, her restaurant’s unique concept, and her experiences as part of the Royal Oak community.

Siri shares her personal journey of moving to the U.S. over 20 years ago and her struggle to find Thai food that matched the flavors she grew up with. That challenge inspired her to create Kacha Thai Market, a restaurant focused on bringing authentic Thai street food to Michigan while incorporating local ingredients. She emphasizes the importance of using fresh, local produce and meats while still importing essential Thai ingredients, like tamarind and palm sugar, to maintain authenticity.

Beyond serving food, Siri is passionate about fostering connections between different cultures and communities. She’s actively involved in local chamber events and has collaborated with other ethnic restaurants for special cultural nights. • From Brain Injury to Financial Advisor: Bryce Sherman's Incredible Story
    2024/09/26

In this episode of The ROCC Pod, we sit down with Bryce and Shayna Sherman, a resilient couple whose life took a dramatic turn when Bryce experienced a traumatic brain injury. Bryce recounts the harrowing accident that occurred during a family trip to Colorado, when he fell from a moving vehicle and suffered a skull fracture, resulting in a life-threatening brain bleed. Shayna explains how Bryce was rushed into emergency surgery, spending 16 days in a coma and on life support for 11 of them. Defying the odds, Bryce survived, even though doctors feared he might never walk again.

Despite facing these physical challenges, Bryce's determination to recover stemmed from his love for his family, especially the thought of playing with his young son. Shayna, in turn, stood as a pillar of strength for the family, making tough decisions and keeping their family together during such a traumatic time. This experience cemented their belief in faith, resilience, and the power of community, which later inspired them to make a significant life change by relocating to Michigan from California. As it turns out, it was the people in Michigan that made them want to come here.

The Shermans also discuss their professional journey into financial advising. Both started in traditional jobs—Shayna as a paralegal and Bryce as an electrician—but found their calling after seeking financial guidance themselves. Realizing the importance of financial literacy, they decided to help others by founding Sherman Financial Group. Bryce highlights the struggle he faced studying for his financial licenses after his brain injury, a challenge that required double the effort due to cognitive impairments. Yet, he passed the exams, demonstrating his perseverance.

The couple's financial philosophy is rooted in protecting income for families and securing generational wealth, which Bryce passionately describes as his legacy. Shayna also stresses the importance of educating others, particularly women, about financial independence and empowerment, aiming to be a role model in this space.

Their story is one of overcoming immense personal adversity, building faith-based resilience, and creating a business that aims to support and uplift families in their financial journeys.
