  • 217: Reflections of a CEO: Tiger Tyagarajan
    2025/03/24
Tiger Tyagarajan was the CEO of Genpact for 13 years. In 1997 he was a founding member of Genpact (created out of GE) with just 20 people, yet today it employs over 130,000 people, generates over $5bn in revenue with 800 global clients in 35 countries. Tiger grew up in Bombay and it was the kids in school who gave him the nickname 'Tiger' from the poem by William Blake, Tyger Tyger, Burning Bright' and the name stuck. Tiger was an engineer originally going on to his MBA starting his first job at a Unilever subsidiary. Tiger's first roles helped him to learn how to lead those much older and wiser than himself. rDuring one story, Tiger remembers a conversation he had with one of his team who was considered the 'god' of selling and how that individual took Tiger under his wing to help him craft his leadership approach and style. This early lesson helped Tiger as CEO to always seek out and cherish the views of the younger generations within the business. At the heart of his approach is 'human curiosity' especially having the curiosity of a child. Exhibiting ignorance is at the heart of a leaders curiosity. We discuss how a leader identifies and retains top talent? Creating a learning culture has always been the answer for Tiger. In this context people can work and learn in order to continually grow. Tiger grew up within GE which was more than one business and so he found himself learning across ecosystems. When the offer of CEO came up, it was too good to turn down as he saw the opportunity for adaptation, growth and curiosity. The ability to adapt would also be essential in Tiger's strategy for the business and have antennas all over the world to pick up signals and create meaning from the noise. Tiger was never frightened to admit he was wrong and course correct when necessary to keep up with the ever changing environment. Even as CEO Tiger ensured he spent 50% of his time facing out of the business and helping shape noise into signal. Tiger's approach as CEO was to encourage always partnership and psychological safety so that he could ensure hearing all voices including dissenting voices. Once a decision had been reached, he also required that leaders who disagreed, now commit.

    2025/03/09
Charl Bassil is the BBC’s first-ever Chief Brand Officer, tasked with developing a unified brand strategy to engage global audiences, strengthen loyalty, and drive digital growth. With a background in marketing and leadership, Charl, originally from South Africa, brings a fresh, external perspective to one of the world’s most iconic institutions. The BBC, founded in 1922, has been at the heart of historic moments—from the first high-definition broadcast in 1936 to the moon landing in 1969. It has shaped global culture with programming like Match of the Day, Peaky Blinders, and MasterChef. However, the organisation faces constant scrutiny—license fee debates, leadership controversies, and the challenge of maintaining trust in an era of misinformation. Charl acknowledges the weight of his role and the need for continuous innovation. He discusses how the BBC’s leadership is focused on transformation, ensuring the organisation remains relevant, resilient, and committed to its public service values. Balancing objectivity with the demand for instant news is a critical challenge, but Charl emphasises that the BBC prioritises accuracy and integrity over speed. During the interview, Charl reflects on his personal purpose aligning with the BBC’s mission. Asked if he wanted to join to help protect democracy and free speech, he found the challenge irresistible. His goal is to empower the team, simplify complexity, and sustain the BBC’s brand in a fragmented media landscape. With technology and audience engagement at the forefront, his vision is clear—build for the future while staying true to the BBC’s legacy.
