The Huddersfield Murder Case of 1888
News of the Times Episode 429 | 1888
Today’s story begins with an execution on New Years Day, 1888 at the hands of Billington. How did he get here?
A relationship, that by all accounts was never good, has completely soured. As the tension rises so do the threats of violence and abusive behaviour.
But Elizabeth, the wife, is no shrinking violet. She reports the threats to the magistrates not once, but on three separate occasions. Charles Bulmer is now on the radar of the police, and he resents it. He is angry with his wife, excusing himself that he had not touched her, only threatened.
Bulmer moves out. Elizabeth will not give him his clothes that he left in the house without a policeman present. Bulmer snaps.
We take a look at the background, the buildup, the crime and the verdict in this murder case from 1888.
For those who like to delve into the peculiar, today’s further particulars story looks at a case from 1889 of a trick played on a newlywed couple on New Year’s Eve.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
