Title: S3EP4, Ted Czech, What is the Essence of True Journalism, Saving the Beast Summary: "Saving the Beast" - A recovering reporter reflects on America's broken media and how to fix it. That is the title and subtitle of Ted Czech's book. Ted was in journalism for 25 years and left when he was disturbed and unsettled by what he was seeing in his field. Professors were no longer teaching that journalists owe allegiance to the truth. Instead, young students were being taught that it was ok to advocate for a side. When did this happen? Why? We explore all of this in our interview. Thank you, Ted, for your commitment to journalism and for ushering in this conversation about the issues that journalism is facing. BIO: Who better than a guy who spent 25 years as a newspaper reporter and established himself as one of the mainstream media's harshest critics to write a book about the broken relationship between the media and the American public? Makes sense to me, but it took me a while to get to this point. You could say writing is in my blood -- my mother was a newspaper reporter and photographer and before her, my grandmother as well. But I started off on a divergent path, earning a degree in criminal justice. However, once I graduated, I decided law enforcement wasn't for me, so I got a job as a security officer by day and pursued a second degree in journalism by night. I then parlayed my two degrees into my first job as a full-time newspaper crime reporter in 1996. Two years later, I moved from Rhode Island to Pennsylvania, working for three different newspapers in the Keystone State, all as a crime and emergency news reporter. Sensing a seismic shift in the craft and industry of journalism, I left newspapers in 2021, and now work in public relations. My first book, Saving the Beast -- A Recovering Reporter Reflects on America's Broken Media and How to Fix it -- is the culmination of nearly two years of dissecting the conundrum of the media versus the public. It is my hope that readers find it educational, informative and entertaining. Title: S2EP69, Making the World A Little Brighter with Suzanne Maggio I felt like I walked El Camino myself. I couldn't put down Suzanne Maggio's book, Estrellas, Moments of Illumination Along El Camino De Santiago. As she walked, I walked. When she got blisters, I got blisters. When she got the message, "you are the light," I got it too. Suzanne experienced many life changing moments along the walk that took her from France to Santiago, Spain. Our conversation was fun, illuminating, and rich. Suzanne’s defining moment happened when she received a paper star. She began to share the light on even the darkest night. Walking El Camino taught Suzanne that we need to learn to listen to each other. Listen with compassion. If we can learn to listen to each other we can have a more peaceful world. Her stories and experiences will change how you see the world. Find out about Suzanne's books, podcast, and adventures at suzannemaggio.com Her podcast is called: From Sparks to Light.
