  • Ep. 14 - My son, James
    2025/05/13

Animals, Paw Patrol and at Kindergarten! This week's podcast has it all! Today's guest is my 5-year-old son, James.

For a month or so, James has been asking me if he can be on this podcast. So this week we finally made the time!

James takes through his thoughts on why scorpions are cool and why his favourite colour is ‘blue-purple’. He also talks about why it’s my fault he’s tired and why he wants to be a vet!

A lot people ask me how my wife and I raise a child in a German speaking country with an Austrian mother and an Australian father. You will quickly notice that James speaks in a hybrid mix of English and German and at times it can be quite difficult to follow. For those of you who speak German, you’ll notice many German words and sentences mixed right in the middle of his English sentences. It’s not always easy but it's a lot of fun to be around. Most of the time, he seems happily unaware that he speaks two languages and my wife and I happily speak German and English with him and let him respond however he likes. I hope you enjoy :)

  • Ep. 13 - Chris Donohue
    2025/05/06

Ireland, Irish and English. This week's guest is one of my best mates, Chris Donohue. Chris lives in Ireland with his Irish wife and children and he takes us through the ins and outs of the fascinating relationship Ireland has with language.

Although Chris was born in Australia, his deep and undying love for Ireland and the Irish culture has resulted in a passion for the Irish language, even though he doesn't speak it. Chris's drive to learn about the language and study it is a wonderful example of how language is more than just a bunch of words.

We hear about Irish in the school system, the attitudes and habits of using Irish amongst native speakers and why Chris the opportunity to immerse himself in the Irish culture, land and people is nothing but an absolute privilege.

  • Ep. 11 - Learning Languages Through Necessity with Stefan Skrabs
    2025/04/22

This week's guest is Stefan Skrabs. Often funny yet always insightful, Stefan gives us a glimpse into his life as an electrical engineer turned salesman and explains why he couldn’t sell you something like a car or a washing machine, but when it’s something complex and difficult, he really shines.

Stefan offers tonnes of valuable information to anybody learning a language. We hear about how Stefan taught himself Spanish and French through necessity, and how a colleague’s one piece of advice helped Stefan make real steps towards speaking foreign languages.
