Previously, he was co-founder and managing partner of consulting firm, Invotech Systems, and a key executive of Waterhealth International, a social start up focused on bringing affordable drinking water purification solutions to developing countries. He graduated from Swarthmore College, where he received High Honors in economics and political science.

Lovely conversation today with Neil Trevett, Chair of the Metaverse Standards Forum! We get to hear about what led him to his position and the important need that the Forum is working on right now, as the Metaverse takes off. I have seen this firsthand when meeting with companies and firms of all sizes. They are looking for a guiding light on all things standards and interoperability, as well as finding a common ground with this soon to be mainstay of the future of the internet.

Interoperability is the bedrock of the metaverse, to enable multiple disruptive technologies to work together, to build bridges between applications to scale beyond a series of disconnected silos, and to evolve a platform that is open and inclusive for all.

Open to any organization, the Metaverse Standards Forum provides a venue for cooperation between standards organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse, and accelerate their development and deployment through pragmatic, action-based projects.

Forum Establishes Pipeline of Exploratory and Domain Working Groups – The Forum has initiated a pipeline of member-driven Exploratory and Working Groups that are meeting regularly to create Charters and execute the projects they define. The Working Groups currently include ‘3D Asset Interoperability using USD and glTF’, ‘Digital Asset Management’, ‘Metaverse Standards Register’ and ‘Real/Virtual World Integration.’ The exploratory groups currently include ‘3D Web Interoperability‘, ‘Digital Fashion Wearables for Avatars, Interoperable Characters/Avatars’, ‘Network Requirements and Capabilities’, ‘Privacy, Cybersecurity & Identity’ and ‘Technical Interoperability and End-User Troubleshooting.’

Today we investigate what I think is a striking lack of women represented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, especially the FinTech sector. With only 8% of leadership roles in FinTech companies held by women, I spend some time with Monica Eaton, Founder of LIFT to understand what might be happening, and more importantly what we can do to change this dynamic.

Monica Eaton is the owner, cofounder & COO of Chargebacks911, a FinTech company that helps merchants in 87 countries eliminate payment theft, prevent chargeback fraud and stop cyber-shoplifting. Since 2011, Chargebacks911 has successfully protected over 10 billion online transactions, and has recovered $1+ billion in disputed and/or stolen revenue for its clients. An industry trailblazer and leading advocate for expanded opportunities for women, Monica is the founder of LIFT, a nonprofit mentorship program that partners the next generation of women in STEM / Tech with established women executives from Microsoft, Chargebacks911, and more.

LIFT is a free mentorship program that seeks to bridge the gap between established women in the industry, and those who are still trying to find their way.

This meeting is a chance for the two to sit down and discuss the mentee’s unique situation. The mentor can provide actionable, specific advice that will serve to help the mentee advance her career.

Participants are asked to identify the professional challenge they are facing. This can range from interview advice, to making a big career move, or navigating through difficult workplace conversations. Once they have submitted a request, a virtual meeting is arranged with a mentor.

At Quantum World Congress, I met with Dr. Kristin Milchanowski who is the Global Quantum Leader for EY to discuss what the landscape of quantum is today.

The way Kristin sees this space, is that she recognizes that not everyone can afford to invest in experimental quantum hardware. Their broader goal is to democratize quantum, and EY has been testing and curating an ecosystem of vendors who are entering the market in droves — just in the last two years they have seen 800 new vendors come through. A client can work with EY and have access to the very best in all these disciplines without spending a lot of money, because they have already done the trial and error.

As EY Global Innovation Quantum Leader, she focuses her time and energy on quantum research projects including portfolio optimization, anomaly detection, sustainable energy demand planning, and DNA sequencing and drug discovery, as well as the more defensive cybersecurity efforts. Today, their team really focuses on quantum sensing since it’s on a “now” time horizon – this is advanced sensor technology that yields extreme accuracy for a wide range of applications, from developing more reliable geolocation systems, more accurate medical diagnostic imaging and safer autonomous vehicles. About a quarter of her time is spent on educating people within EY and externally about what quantum is all about.
