Jesus is praying the Lord’s Prayer, also known as the Priestly Prayer, on the evening He will be arrested and ultimately crucified. Specifically, Jesus prayed that His followers be one the same way He and The Father are one. The words of Jesus are mysterious, yet the most beautiful and life-giving words ever spoken. The way we view our union with Christ ultimately determines the way we understand salvation. Because of Christ, we are not just individuals; we are united to Him, and through Him, we are united to one another. We are not with Him as individuals; we come into a collective society. In a world that is increasingly becoming more selfish and self-centered, and where the three most important people are me, myself, and I, we can invite the people on our FRANC List (Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances, Neighbors, Classmates, and Coworkers) into His Church where what we offer is contextualized to the places we live, work, learn, and play all because of the risen and living Jesus.

God has Paul write that he lived in jeopardy of death because of His love for Jesus and willingness to share the Jesus he loved. To his credit, Paul was willing to give up his life for the sake of Christ and His Gospel. Like Paul, followers of Christ today do not have to be afraid of death because we know that Jesus will either keep us in the flesh on earth or eternally keep us in the flesh. The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus gives us the hope to expect that He will also raise us.

The Lord has John explain that the followers of Christ were not just called children of God; He actually became their Father because of His love and the salvation He provides, not their wisdom or righteous living. We are not just “brothers and sisters in Christ;” but we are permanently bound together as brothers and sisters, united by Christ with new responsibilities, mutual accountability, and obligations. The Church of Jesus Christ is a collective society that shares in the life and last days because we have the benefit of being united to Jesus through His death, burial, and resurrection.

While everyone is a child of God in the sense that we owe our lives to Him, we can only become His children in the intimate and loving sense of reentering His collective society of shalom only by an act of God's initiating grace and the response of faith in our hearts. This is not something any one of us can do alone; we are meant to and can only share His peace together. This is the new family we invite all who are unchurched into.
