  • 27. Dealing with "Not in the Budget"
    2025/05/28

When you or your clients have the knee-jerk reaction "We can't, that's not in the budget" what does that really mean?

On this episode I expose the difference between "we literally have no more money to spend" and "I don't want to spend my money on THAT" which is what it often comes down to when people use the excuse "no budget." As always it boils down to planning ahead, and knowing your intensions and whether the financial budget is the problem or if you are reflexively rejecting change. Keep an eye out for when you could use your time, effort, or advice budget instead of financial budget.

  • 26. OSCT - Decor
    2025/05/21

On this episode of One Small Change Today we talk about DECOR

Starting today add to your planning, spreadsheet, etc. a question for every item that you (or your vendors) bring to site: What happens to this item at teardown?

For your existing programs you may go straight down the line and enter "trash" for all but as you start to consider for every single item in every design you will naturally start to find solutions that Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink, and your Exit Strategy will become more sustainable. And you will naturally have a metric of how much you increase the use of rented, reusable, or donated materials.

Also consider the psychological power of minimizing clutter and maximizing impact and immersion. Psychological research is showing us that technology is making us more sensitive to overwhelm by keeping us close to or over the line of visual and mental overwhelm all the time, so when your attendees look up you want to provide them the most clarity and cohesion possible to leave a clear impression and to ease their mind's way to enjoyment.

  • 25. Sick Day
    2025/05/07

    Transcript:

[Dog bark] Alright, then let's go.

Hey friend, today is going to be a short admin episode. As you can tell, I'm doing a bit of an ASMR special. Last week, I choked on some food like the elegant swan I am, and in the aftermath, seem to have picked up some sort of throat infection, and so I have been croaking like a dead frog for days. And so I just wanted to pop in for a quick message of irony to share, because I know the likelihood is that you are a small business and that being sick and having a scratchy voice and all those sorts of things, and even just work from home mean that you don't get time off, deadlines don't get moved and all that jazz. And so I felt compelled to have something pop into your feed this week. And we can use it as a really small reminder of the value of the third pillar of Sustainability, which is Personal Health and Well Being and taking time when possible, to take care of yourself and do less, even if it is hard or your brain has other ideas about what's good for you and your business and your income. And before everything went to hell and hand basket this week, I was onsite with a new friend, hearing all about their experience working for years, doing major concert touring. And how those are 21 hour days. There's not anything I can do about it. It's a small crew of absolute experts, and everyone just has to pull their weight, because everything is down to timing. And the show must go on. And so you sleep when you can and eat when you can, and you make your best choices. But that's sort of the sacrifice of our industry sometimes, and I think most important thing is to maintain perspective, so you can make choices and you can know that you're doing what you're doing on purpose and not out of reflex or just the nervousness. So hopefully this ASMR special hasn't been too intense for you. That's about all I've got in the tank. I will see you back next week for hopefully a fully capable laryngeal experience. And my vocal cords thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • 24. 3 Concepts in Communication
    2025/04/30

There is a bit of wind noise in this recording, I have reached the limit of my sound engineering lessons and need to go back down the rabbit hole. Thank you for your patience with me, Renee doesn't even TRY to help so it gets hard.

This week I go through analyzing the overlap in a couple different lessons in communication I've been learning recently. These lessons apply throughout your business, and probably with your kids!

I start with breaking down the main thesis of the book Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller which is to remember that everyone lives as the Hero/Main character of their own story and the more you can communicate that you are supporting them and making them have more success instead of making them share the spotlight or demote them to a supporting role the more psychological success you'll have.

Next I discuss the concept of the Inner Two-Year-Old from Zoe Chance's book Influence is Your Superpower, where she reminds us that no one wants to be told they are the villain or doing something wrong, and they definitely don't want to feel like the things they already have are being taken away so it's important to frame your communication in positive terms and emphasize wins and upsides.

Then I use the metaphor of spilled water to break down the idea of the path of least resistance and that any obstacles or inconveniences can subconsciously deter us and our clients and can be incredibly hard to predict (how is water under here?!?,) so it's important to watch for those, track them, correct them and make uptake on your advice or services as easy as possible. I also reference the discipline in Architectural that focuses on human behavior to try to predict and control the path of least resistance, and how hard it is.

When used together these concepts can make a huge impact on how quickly and easily clients understand and get on board with any proposal.

  • 23. Talking with Clients (part 2)
    2025/04/23

This week Part Two of my outline of considerations on how to talk with your clients about Sustainability at Events

Building on last week's episode I bring you ideas on making sure to pitch your sustainability talk as framed by outcomes, avoiding insider terms and tech-talk. With a reminder that this is information that your clients WANT, even if they don't ask for it or don't know how to ask for it.

When you are handling your clients my advice, first and foremost, is to incorporate the considerations on your side and use it as a tool to make your clients life better and give added value, rather than burdening them with trying to understand or dictate the wisest, most sustainable choices.

Build it into your onboarding with your clients, make sure to use simple and understandable language, then present outcomes to your clients whenever you have Sustainability considerations in mind so they can see the benefits of your expertise. Help them understand how the Sustainability metrics from your work and your vendors are a marketing, education and communication benefit that they can roll into their publicity about the event. Meanwhile of course, you can use it in your metrics for your office as well.
