The disciples have noticed that Jesus withdraws from larger groups frequently to pray. They ask Jesus to teach them how to pray and Jesus' response forms the foundation for Christian prayer today.

    Luke 10:25-37 Common English Bible

25 A legal expert stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to gain eternal life?”

26 Jesus replied, “What is written in the Law? How do you interpret it?”

27 He responded, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

28 Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

29 But the legal expert wanted to prove that he was right, so he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Jesus replied, “A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. He encountered thieves, who stripped him naked, beat him up, and left him near death. 31 Now it just so happened that a priest was also going down the same road. When he saw the injured man, he crossed over to the other side of the road and went on his way. 32 Likewise, a Levite came by that spot, saw the injured man, and crossed over to the other side of the road and went on his way. 33 A Samaritan, who was on a journey, came to where the man was. But when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. 34 The Samaritan went to him and bandaged his wounds, tending them with oil and wine. Then he placed the wounded man on his own donkey, took him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day, he took two full days’ worth of wages and gave them to the innkeeper. He said, ‘Take care of him, and when I return, I will pay you back for any additional costs.’ 36 What do you think? Which one of these three was a neighbor to the man who encountered thieves?”

37 Then the legal expert said, “The one who demonstrated mercy toward him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

    • Two of the most famous characters in science fiction movies

      • Tasked with different jobs and have different temperaments

      • C-3PO is a diplomat, a communicator - R2-D2 repairs and computer files

      • Paired together, frustrated with each other, ultimately care and repair

      • scattered to places they never thought they’d be - expanding the story

{SCR} Luke 10:1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. 5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’

{MPT} The disciples are the first to tell the story

    • The first thing that villagers hear, may be the only thing they remember

      • Important responsibility for those being sent by Jesus

      • Entrusted with the hope and purpose of the latest message from God

    • Jesus seems curious who will minister to his people…before his people share

{MPT} Storytellers must decide where to begin

    • First, they begin with people they approach

      • Who would you approach - people of similar age or lifestyle? Different

      • Upside - The direction is broad, visit and tell

    • Second, they begin with the point they emphasize first

      • What would you pick? Healing, Teaching, Serving, Miracles

      • Upside - The power is evident in each category

{SCR} Luke 10:17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

{MPT} What story do the workers tell themselves and others?

    • Depends on

      • Communication & Attentive

      • Opportunity & Willing

      • Hope & Enthusiastic

    • And what is the root of that hope?

{SCR} Luke 10:20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

{MPT} Our story must first begin with being called to serve

    • "My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread thro' all the earth abroad, the honors of your name."
