In this episode of our Summer Campaign Series, we talk about player character death and morality in Fallout TTRPGs. I share my perspective as a GM on how player attitudes toward character mortality have shifted, especially in high-stakes systems like Fallout and Pathfinder. We dig into how choices shape faction relationships, moral tension, and long-term consequences. Plus, a quick update on our ongoing storyline—including the battle for Watoga—and an invite to our upcoming community rewatch of the Fallout TV series to deepen our shared storytelling toolbox.Meet & Greet 3: On Death, Consequences, and Moral Weight in Fallout TTRPGsThis week’s episode is a shorter one—some of our regulars were out on vacation—but the conversation still dives deep. We focus on something I think a lot of GMs wrestle with: how do we handle player character death and moral consequences in a way that feels earned? Our returning guest Neri kicks things off with a great question about how I handle character death at the table. Especially in systems like Fallout 2d20 or high-level Pathfinder, where things can get pretty lethal, it’s something I’ve learned to talk about openly with players. Unlike fantasy games where resurrection magic can undo a death, Fallout has a different tone—death tends to be final, and that changes how players think about risk. It’s been interesting to watch how attitudes shift. Early on, some players were really protective of their characters—understandably so, after putting in time and backstory. But over time, the table's gotten more comfortable with the idea that death (or long-term injury) can actually deepen the story. Especially in our upcoming three-shot arcs, we’re embracing the idea that death is on the table—and that makes every choice feel a little more real.We also talk about how consequences don’t always have to mean death. Drawing inspiration from systems like Blades in the Dark, I’ve started introducing lasting injuries and scars that carry forward into future scenes. It’s a way to add narrative weight without always ending a character’s arc. Fallout is great for that—it’s already a world full of trauma and survival, so leaning into those gritty details just makes sense. The conversation naturally steers toward factions and politics—two things Fallout thrives on. We discuss how player decisions affect their standing with groups like raiders or the Brotherhood, and how small choices can spiral into major shifts in the campaign world. There’s a lot of tension between doing what’s right and doing what’s necessary in the Wasteland, and that’s the kind of stuff I love exploring with players. We also touch on a few current threads in the campaign—especially the ongoing mission to retake Watoga. There’s a looming sense that failure is possible, and that tension creates some of the best moments at the table. What happens if the players don’t succeed? What happens if the city falls? Fallout doesn’t shy away from those questions—and neither do we.To wrap things up, I mention something we’re doing soon: a community rewatch of the Fallout TV series. It’s not just for fun (though it will be); it’s a chance to look at how the show handles tone, pacing, and worldbuilding—and maybe steal a few tricks for our own campaigns. All in all, this was a reflective episode—less crunchy mechanics, more storytelling philosophy. If you’re a GM, writer, or just someone who loves post-apocalyptic roleplay, this one’s worth a listen.Join the Adventure:* 🎥 Watch us live every Sunday on Twitch at 7:30 PM ET* 📺 Catch up on episodes through our YouTube channel* 📺 Follow Kyle’s secondary YouTube channel for Fallout prop reviews and deep dives* 💬 Join our Discord community for behind-the-scenes content and discussions* 🎙️ Follow our TFT podcast for enhanced storytelling and exclusive commentary* 🎙️ Follow our Vault Broadcast podcast for community interviews* 💰 Support us on Patreon for shoutouts in episodes as well as behind-the-scenes content!* 📱 Follow us on TikTok and Instagram for more!Use our Affiliate Codes:* 🛒 Get 20% off the Bethesda Gear Shop using our codes:BTALES28, BTALES29, and BTALES30* (If one doesn’t work, try increasing the number — they expire often!)* 📚 Get 10% off the Modiphius shop when buying the Fallout TTRPG using code BTALES* 🛍️ Shop Amazon with our Amazon Affiliate link.Grab your Pip-Boy and stock up on RadAway – the wasteland awaits!
