  • Is Aaron Rodgers Holding Up T.J. Watt Deal? | Steelers Morning Rush
    2025/04/18
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the idea that the Steelers are waiting to resolve things with free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers before they negotiate a contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt brought the topic of his contract extension into the forefront with his curious social media post, but in reality, the Steelers do not generally talk contact extensions with current players until later in the summer. They deal with trying to re-sign players before they hit free agency, then talk to free agents, then deal with the draft, wrap up second-wave free agency in May, and then deal with their own players in the summer. That's the way they've always done business, and while part of the idea behind Watt's post might have been to develop a sense of urgency with his process, the Steelers not wanting to talk turkey with their defensive star doesn't have anything to do with Rodgers. The Steelers have plenty plenty of salary cap space available to sign Rodgers right now -- well over $30 million -- and they can painlessly make plenty of more with a couple of restructures. That's more than enough money to sign Rodgers now. A new deal with Watt is likely to reduce his 2025 salary cap hit, and could reduce it substantially, so the cap is not at all standing in the way of the Steelers doing business with both Rodgers and Watt. 2025/04/17
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, Ed Thompson joins us to discuss his photos of Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh being shared on the Pat McAfee show and other places following the QB confirming it was him. We discuss what Aaron had to say in his first appearance of the off-season, if we buy what he's selling and if we are any closer or farther away from finding out what the ultimate outcome will be. We also answer some NFL Draft questions such as where the value can be found at certain positions and why the Steelers can't compound their QB issues any further. • What to Make of Shedeur Sanders Reports? | Steelers Morning Rush
    2025/04/17
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the reporting surrounding the pre-draft meeting between the top Pittsburgh brass and Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Shedeur Sanders. Sanders came to Pittsburgh for a pre-draft visit late in the process, and the reporting surround that visit has been strange, with some breathlessly discussing the length of the visit (five hours is perfectly average) and others baselessly claiming it didn't go well. • Should Steelers Pay T.J. Watt $40M? | Steelers Morning Rush
    2025/04/16
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the pending contract extension for star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. Watt will almost certainly get a contract extension in the range of the four-year, $160 million contract the Cleveland Browns gave Myles Garrett earlier this offseason. While that seems like a lot, it's actually a smaller percentage of the salary cap than the deal Nick Bosa signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 and represents a bargain for his production. What about a trade? Is it possible to get the kind of value a team would need to trade a player of the caliber of Watt? Alan breaks it down. #steelers #herewego #nfl Learn more about your ad choices. Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss if the picture is becoming any clearer about the direction the Steelers will go in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft as the pre-draft visits wrapped up. Is QB, WR, S or RB as much or even more likely than DT based off the information we have? Did they pivot during the process? If they do land a QB this year, how much does that change the 2026 approach? Let's go for another Steelers Afternoon Drive and discuss all this and more! Learn more about your ad choices. • Explaining Steelers Defensive Line Positions | Steelers Morning Rush
    2025/04/15
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the names for the positions that defensive linemen line up in. The Steelers traditionally play in a 3-4 defense, which uses a nose tackle and two defensive ends. Some teams use a 4-3, with two defensive ends and two defensive tackles. But those defensive ends are not the same. In the Steelers' base defense, the ends play directly over or just inside the tackle, while ends in a 4-3 play well outside, sometimes even outside the tight ends. That makes 4-3 defensive ends more similar to Pittsburgh outside linebackers. Instead of vague descriptions like end and tackle, NFL teams have a system to break down each possible defensive line alignment, starting with a zero technique, which is a true nose tackle over the center, and moving outward from there. So when the Steelers are looking at defensive lineman, what do we mean when we saw three-technique or five-technique? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices.
