I've never had a song come out of me as fast as this one did. This came to me after I missed out on a family outing due to my own apathy - I just didn't feel like going. I was playing my guitar on the back porch thinking about how much I regretted staying, and the words to the verses just poured out of me in about half an hour. I was openly sobbing as was moved by the words that kept coming. I wrote the chorus the next morning.V1Taking bike rides in the parkCatching fireflies after darkHitting that swimming holeOr giving a push and pull to that ol' beat up tire swingThese are the things that summer's made ofAnd when you're a kid, oh, it's the greatestA blanket spread under fireworksA baseball game with with your father, and those evening suns that just never want to setAnd how you wished it would never endAnd how you'd count the weeks til school's back inBut still that calendar'd keep flipping and flipping and flippingCHWhy does it have to go so fastI want a life with no regretsWe've each got our own story to tellAnd when they write my book I hope it's titled,He lived it wellV2Well now my kids tug on my armsSaying "daddy take us to the park"And while I've lost all sense of wonderThey know there's still a kid down underneath all my maturitySo they ask a second timeI see that sparkle in their eyesAnd I want that sense of wonder tooBut all to often I just choose myself and for that we all loseBut then before I knowI start asking "where'd all the time go"It slips away with every inch they're growing and growing and growingCHI wanna live it wellCome join me,live it wellSpend some time skipping rocks, live it wellMaybe drop a line down by the dockGo play catch, or fly a kiteDon't let those moments pass you byRead 'em a book, pitch a tentGive 'em the gift of your presenceLive it well, live it wellDon't be afraid to live it wellDie to yourself and live it wellJust live it well, just live it wellBeauty Remains ::V1When the heartache's so great that you can't make a soundAnd all that you hear is your breathing in and outIn that moment you wish this pain would passBut already knowing it surely will lastBR1Because that kind of hurt doesn't go away easyIt pours out of hearts that've known love deeplyThat kind of hurt doesn't go away easyIt doesn't go away easyCHBecause a beautiful soul is so beautiful no matter how empty, no matter how fullAnd that beauty's a mark of the Creator's heartFound in each image bearer, it's His calling cardAnd although their beauty may fade, their beauty remainsV2So what do you do when that hard truth is knownAnd just no matter how hard you try, there's no letting goIt'll hit you in waves 'til your last dying breathWith both tears and laughter again and again and againBR2Because that kind of love doesn't go down easyIt becomes a part of your very beingThat kind of love doesn't go down easyIt doesn't go down easyIt doesn't go downThat kind of love doesn't go down easyIt overcomes the hurting and the grievingThat kind of love doesn't go down easyIt doesn't go down easyYour Glory Awaits ::I love playing this song around easter. I wrote it a few years back, and always thought it needed something at the end so I added a little more this year. I just love the picture of Jesus identifying with us in our darkness. Such beautiful imagery that Jesus, being fully human, also fully understands our trouble, and pressed through it in obedience to glorify his Father. The words to this song came while sitting alone by a campfire in the wilderness of West Virginia. I was playing this simple tune on my uke, and as the fire died out, I continued to sit and play as my surroundings became complete darkness. It is a picture of wrestling through the lonely, fearful, angry, dark places in life. It's about the ongoing, repeated decision to lay down those things before Jesus, to surrender them to him in the same way that he surrendered to his Father. In doing so - in giving him total control of our thoughts, decisions, and will - a space is created in which he is free to act and reveal his glory to those all around us. His kingdom is advanced as we lay ourselves down in the most vulnerable, difficult places in life.V1in a solitary place the last ember is fadingand this darkness is so thick I cannot see anythingand as the fear creeps in with despair to followI'm struck with the notion that you'd lead me to the shadowsand who am I to think this loss comes without purposealas, but in this night your eye has seen everythingand after all the "why's" give way to plain acceptancethese ...
